I backed The Fugue and was a bit miffed by the ride,until saw the re-run and must say lve change my mind about the ride,in fact l think now he done really to finish as close as he did. Thats racing

I've got a lot of time for, William. But, come on that was a poor ride. There is noway he should be letting horses come across him while he held a such a good spot. He shouldn't be giving them an inch. He gave the horse time to recover which was great jockeyship, but he should have got The Fugue rolling sooner and not when the pace quickened.

William needs to note when a stable has more than one runner against him. Barzalona blatantly kept him in on Gatewood trying to keep him from beating Jamie Spencer for the same connections while Betterbetterbetter did him in the oaks aided by Daryll Holland. He will learn that when you are on a favourite in a big race, tactics can be very nasty.

On what I saw you couldn't blame Buick for that ...a choker for connections and backers but as taximan rightly says ...that's racing  and indeed that's life.

the fugue was making ground hand over first in the last two furlongs and wasn't stopping. would have won comfortably had she been ridden closer to the pace. it's buick's own fault that he'll be going home without an oaks win in his pocket. i'm not sure the lad is ready for the big leagues. got a feeling he might be jocked off next time.

the reason he was so far back was the filly nearly came down after a couple of furlongs, epsom isnt a track you can make ground up easily. he was unlucky, wont be the first or last around that gaff.

come on now, he had plenty of time to get that horse into the race. if he had gotten the horse closer after a 4 or 5 furlongs, he would have won. it's a mile and a half race not a sprint, he could have easily manoeuvred the horse into contention. instead he chose to play silly buggers and it cost him the race.

that track is notoriously hard to make ground up and run at a crawl made it worse. the only way was to come wide, had he gone inside he would have met further trouble. trying to make ground up wide on tattenham corner would imo meant the filly would have finished further back. the filly was nearly on the deck, it takes time to get organised again.
everyone is entitled to their opinions, mine is he was not to blame. she looked the best filly in the race, maybe was also out the back early and probably didnt get home. these two might well prove the form all wrong, around a more friendly track.

the bunching off a slow pace imo makes it harder, i dont think he was ever in the position to make up ground after being hampered and did well to finish where he did.

its your opinion mines is different, i just find it hard for anyone who took time to watch it a few times can think it was a dire ride.

I'd say a lot of the connections were taken by surprise as most were I suspect expecting at least one of the Coolmore animals to blaze off out in front, that didn't happen because O'Brien had his doubts that any of his would stay a fast run 12f, the Channon runner probably found itself in front almost by default?.
The race was slow by 3.68s considering the fast conditions it was run at a dawdle.

Having said that Buick has to shoulder some of the blame as he was a little too far back when the sprint began in earnest up front and was caught a bit flat footed.

i agree with most of what you say SG, on any other course i would probably agree with the lot.

i'm saying the slow early pace means he could have more easily monoeuvred the horse into a decent position, in the early part of the race. instead he chose to sit at the back - and yes it was a choice - he could have chosen to sit closer to the pace. and that's what being a top jock is all about - making the right choices.

Just had a look back on the race and I'll revise my opinion somewhat, the interference he suffered was a lot worse than I intially thought Buick lost his position through no fault of his own, and seemed to be plenty close enough in the straight, he didn't really quicken more stayed on.

I think Buick was more unlucky than actual bad jockeyship if the interference didn't happen he most likely would've prevailed?.

looking at her first two races, (only six runners last time)its the way she has been ridden, held up, so where she was before the interference is probably where he was meant to be. had she not suffered the interference i believe he would have made up the ground before tattenham corner and been in a better position. the filly did get mullered.

Forget about the interference early on. When they hit the straight, nothing was travelling better. It's at this point that Buick lost the race. He sat motionless for too long and allowed those up with the pace to steal a march on him. The other jocks were hard at it, but Buick didn't get serious with his mount until inside the 2 pole.

Exactly, he got the horse organised and travelling after the interference and then just sat there before getting involved far too late.  Its just one of those things but i'm sure this guy isn't up to it.  Time will tell.  The track is always a fookin nightmare as well.  There are only 9 runners tomorrow so the result should be fair.

did frankie not ride an equally poor race in the oaks last year. the course obviously has a lot to do with the jockeys trying to balance their horses and in doing so making a horlocks of the way they ride the race. lester wasnt the master on this course for nothing. buick is coming in for too much stick as usual by people who have lost a few quid on the fav. its all part of the game
