Judging by this years field I'd say something like the paay poer handicap chase or a grade 3 hurdle.

A mile and a half bumper. The only difference is they go about 30 seconds slower in the bumper.

It's a truly disgusting field for what was once a great race.

Yes a poor turn out this year, it sort of resembles a French Derby line up.

But along with the Grand National, my joint favourite race of the year.

Followed by Ascot's King Geroge, the Arc and July Cup.

My favourite flat racing day of the year but totally agree that it is more like a French Derby this year. If Camelot doesn't go on the track it could be very open and if nothing else there is a chance for place money. Surely there should have been more British horses instead of us hoping Ballydoyle will put 5 in to make up the numbers.

Cant think of a Jump race where you have to pay to park on the downs to watch it Mischief

I thought The Downs wer common land.
It's always been the equivalent of The Triumph Hurdle btw, though certainly this year that got a better field.

I don't think we were hoping ballydoyle would put 5 in to make up the numbers.
you would probably find that if camelot was not in it then it might have been a 20 runner race.

Is it really any different to the opposition running scared of Sprinter Sacre in what is supposed to be the season's premier novice chase - The Arkle?
Report andrewbjm June 1, 2012 12:15 PM BST
I'd consider that worse TBH, as no matter how good a jumps horse is there is always a chance they or the jockey could have a lapse in concentration and end up in a heap.

Camelot should be fine tomorrow. With there being less than ten runners, he has less chance of getting boxed in (massive pressure on Joseph to make sure he doesn't). So as long as he doesn't end up with too much to do at the end, his turbo in the final 2f should see him home.

Seems too many flat trainers don't want to have a sporting go, and would rather look for other 'softer' options just so the owners can say the horse won a group one for the bloody stud value.

Have the French really not got a credible contender ...?

The Derby has tradition history and status and is generally won by the best three year old colt, for that reason it's counterpart would be the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
