WHAT will it take to see the world's best two racehorses go head to head? An one-off cash bounty? A custom 1400-metre race? One horse stepping up or the other dropping down in distance? The answer: don't hold your breath.
Racing fans everywhere are still hoping to see Black Caviar take on English megastar Frankel during the next few months but the managing owner of Australia's champion mare says it's not going to happen.
In a perfect scenario, Neil Werrett would love his sprinter to defeat Frankel but he concedes it's too difficult to arrange, even if Black Caviar will be racing at least twice in England in the coming months.
''It's nice to think about and dream about but I don't think it will ever happen,'' he told the Herald yesterday. ''It looks as though Frankel will go to the mile on the Tuesday [Queen Anne Stakes on June 19] and then go 10 furlongs [2000m] after that so I don't see him going back in distance and I don't think we'll be going to a mile at that stage.
''Unfortunately it's probably not an option for now. That's life. I don't think the dynamics are going to work this year, anyway.''
Frankel boasts a Timeform rating of 142 following his five-length comeback win in the Lockinge Stakes, six points ahead of Black Caviar in the latest ratings. The all-time record is held by Sea Bird II with a rating of 145, two points above Frankel's best rating, achieved last year prior to injury.
Yet while the public will have to be satisfied with the two horses running their own races, Werrett is still excited by what lies ahead as Peter Moody sets the horse for the 1200m Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 23.
''She's good. She's had 10 days off, just doing slow work,'' Werrett said. ''She'll start fast work at the end of the week and she'll have a decent hitout on the Saturday [June 2] and then get on a plane four days later. It's not far off now and the excitement is building.''
No expense is being spared for the unbeaten five-year old, who is travelling with an entourage of carers to ensure she arrives in peak health.
''Peter's doing everything he can and we're sending three people on the plane with her, including a vet, to make sure that she travels well,'' Werrett said. ''You can't ever be sure but we'll do everything we can to protect her. If she gets over there and she's not well then we simply won't race her. It'd be the biggest shame of all time but the horse's health is our priority.
''However, she's a pretty relaxed horse these days and travelling doesn't seem to bother her one bit. She's content around the yard so I think she'll be fine.''
While Black Caviar won't be stepping up to the mile to challenge Frankel, Werrett says his mare could most definitely handle 1600m.
''I think she can go the mile - Peter's convinced she could probably go up to 2000m,'' he said. ''We'll see about that, but the plan for now when she returns is to run her in the Manikato Stakes on Cox Plate eve and then go to Patinack Farm Classic [a race she's already won twice] again. We won't be leaving her in England long, she'll be coming straight back as soon as her two races are done.''

In all honesty, the frankel team acknowledge the greatness of the mare and consequently choose not to step down to 6f in order to preserve her unbeaten record, you've got to take your hat off to the frankel team for being so gracious i think.

a number of our champion sprinters of recent years, stravinsky, mozart and dream ahead were all dropped down in trip for not staying a mile effectively, surely no one is in any doubt that if frankel had adopted the same route he would blow anything away over 6, would he beat BC over 6, i wouldn't dismiss it that easily.

Sprinters don't have the same value as milers and thats a global situation, you can breed horses that can bolt up at 2-3 furlongs and indeed this type of runner is raced but like I said the goalpost is 12 furlong for classic horses and less is less and thats a fact as name one big sprint race that has global status in the racing calender
