It makes me so angry when they do that. It's about time they made the bans even longer so that once and for all the jockeys know if they don't ride out it's going to cost them a packet. 6 months should do it.

Agreed that was a fairly pointless comment duncan but could you add something to this discussion rather than ridiculing people.

Not me blackpood, didn't have a bet in the race. You must have thought it was a good ride and the drive from Hanagan was tremendous? Silly

Report sirdogleashcharnier • May 22, 2012 4:53 PM BST
no bet in race either

does not mean it was not a very poor ride

Report richters • May 22, 2012 5:00 PM BST
duncan before he got the hamdam job hannagan could hardly get a ride at the big meetings...he was riding sh ite round the northern tracks....apart from a few average fahey horses he never rode any decent animals....
Report Nige down south • May 22, 2012 5:08 PM BST
I have to agree with richters, i never really been a fan of him as i dont think he is that strong. Still he has won the title so he must be doing something right.

common theme here lads..obviously the hamdan horses are to be treated with care.wasnt hills the same before him?
Report blackpood • May 22, 2012 5:38 PM BST
Richters. He was stable jockey to Fahey for several seasons. Fahey has dozens of runners a week, and employs a few different jockeys. Pray, tell us all how he was supposed to "hardly get a ride at big meetings" as you put it, when he was ridund for the Fahey stable. You really haven't thought this one out have you. Laugh
Report richters • May 22, 2012 5:44 PM BST
Blackpood can you give me a run down of hannagans derby mounts down the years could yea please....thankyou.......im not saying hes a bad jockey,in fact he is a good jockey, but not in the class of murtagh, kinane, fallon even spencer.....
Report blackpood • May 22, 2012 5:52 PM BST
How can you put him in the same bracket as Murtagh, Fallon etc. Are you  thick. Don't you read. He was stable jock to Richard Fahey. He was never going to get many Group 1 rides from him. Now he has got a top job, he may well become mentioned in the same breath as your mentioned class jockeys.

stable jockey still doesnt mean he cant pick up spare rides ffs....some years the top stables have 3 or 4 runners and their stable jocks can only ride one....

This could have been an interesting debate.

PH gets offered the job as HRH'S retained rider (NOT quite the same as stable jockey!). Six figure retainer, but second choice after SDS.   Accepts obviously.

Now goes from riding a mixture of ill-bred dogs, monkeys and triers, to riding a range of beautifully bred dogs monkeys etc, AND for an owner whose motivation is group races and future breeding stock, and whose preference is to see his horses treated, perhaps not with kid gloves but certainly not knocked about, particularly fillies and/or first time out.

Not surprisingly, he is taking time to adjust to the new regime, and falling off in front of the Sheikh on his first ride probably didnt do much for his confidence.Wink. I am actually pretty confident that everything will work out fine for him, he will adjust and learn, and of course win the Jersey at Royal Ascot for his new bossWink

This seasons strike rate 28%, compares favourably with that of the Sheikhs new Assistant Racing Manager.
Report hello :-) • May 22, 2012 10:51 PM BST
I didnt bet the race but PH looked to me to be pushing to the line , not an owner who likes to see his horses thrashed to win a maiden , the horse will have learned and most likely win this season , just take note and wait .

As aid below 28% is a pretty decent strike rate , top jock PH and will be even better in time when he settles into the role
Report ima_mazed66 • May 23, 2012 1:52 AM BST
Ultimately he was beaten by a fast finisher so you have to say he's made a misjudgement but he had been pushing from a long way out and got the better of those on his inside and I'm not sure if he thought he had used up his whip quota or just didn't realise too late that the other 2 were coming up his other side, then didn't have time to get in another slap of the whip but you would have to think he would have won had he done so.

He certainly did stop riding though and was only beaten a nose and on first viewing looked like he might have even held on, so his misjudgement was to minimal margins but I appreciate that's no consolation to punters. Interesting though that the winning jockey only hit his horse twice and so they can still win with momentum and hands and heels anyway.
Report unitedbiscuits • May 23, 2012 10:55 AM BST
I suppose he has a job for life now, so it is us who need to adjust, rather than him.
