Not alone was he a bad rider but he is even worse on the telly.I dont see why people should have to mute the tv when hes on,it spoils the coverage for everyone.

rode 1303 winners , but just a passenger on racing's gravy train
Report robo May 9, 2012 8:56 PM BST
Rode 1303 winners he may have had,but look at the rise of Hendersons fortunes when Geraghty got the nod.Fitzgerald was a poor rider,Lucy Gardiner would have ridden a 1000 winners for Henderson in the time he was there.

nonsense,as a jock he was top class and as a pundit he is 1 of the best on the tv.his analysis of a jump horse or of a particular race is very good.
Report robo May 9, 2012 9:08 PM BST
Grey shark, its not just me that hes needling it is everybody that watches the show.I know people will have their preferences when it comes to hosts and guests on the racing channells.Their voices can be off putting or their lack of knowledge, their insincerity, patronising tones, the list is endless.Nobody will like listening to Mick Fitzgerald because firstly his voice is so grating and secondly because his apparent lack of knowledge and research sticks out like a sore thumb.
Report robo May 9, 2012 9:10 PM BST
Kingrat as a jockey he wasnt top class,he held Henderson back for 10 years or more.

None of the gravy train have any shame. They are collectively a scandlous bunch of journos and broadcasters. With exception to Simon Holt and Richard Hoiles that is.

Report cyprusal May 9, 2012 10:13 PM BST
what mick fitz has done is just fall in line with all the other racing pros who have turned to punditry, and thats get on the gravy train and dont do or say anything that might upset anyone in their little world.can you imagine any ex jock being racings equivalant of roy keane, coming on and saying what they really think and not being worried about upsetting anybody,it just aint gonna happen, nobody would be moaning about fitzys grating voice if he used it to ask at least one worthwhile question
Report holywell May 10, 2012 7:18 AM BST
One of the major factors in ATR and the BBC employing Mick Fitzgerald would be because of his contacts in the game i.e. he would be more likely to be granted an interview with AP Macoy, Nicky Henderson etc., at a race meeting than for example Robert Cooper. Because Macoy and Henderson and others within racing are friends of Fitzgerald they will be more relaxed in an interview and may well divulge more than they would with another presenter ?

The job of his employers would be to improve his interview / presentation technique to camera, not to push him to ask controversial questions. If you ask interviewees difficult questions you wont get future interviews, I'm afraid thats the way it works.

As a punter i thought Fitz was reliable as a rider. You can crab a mans voice but that would be bordering on racismMischief....Obviously he knows more about race horses than you or i will ever know and he has an insight into the trainers and jockey`s but you cant honestly expect him to be critical or confrontational because burning bridges is not the done thing in racing as everybody is very sensitive to the corruption aspect.

Gary Nevill for example would not think twice about saying John Terry played a stinker because corruption is not so much linked to football.

What a shower of ungratful bastids you lot are. only last year with mick on his deathbed he heroicly was able to continue tipping odds on good things.

holywell has it right, its an access thing. I must admit I find his analysis woeful and t be honest really lazy. But that suits me as you just assume that al of the lazy punters follow him leaving value for the rest of us! Wonderful.
Report BARNSTER May 10, 2012 9:03 AM BST
all that presenters and pundits are, good or bad is padding between races, the powers that be at both racing channels dont seem to realize that all the large percentage of the people that watch dedicated racing channels  want is pictures of the horses in the parade ring, going to the start and the race itself with good comentry, they seem to think we might get bored of watching horses just walking round the parade ring and turn over and watch something else for 5 minutes b4 the race,so they think plying us with bland, frightened presenters, doing,in the main, horrible, toadying interviews and giving us their views(usually just read from the spotlight)will keep us riveted to the tv,from what i can make out from reading these posts, most people reach for the mute button between races when a large number of these presenters are on and so they are having the opposite of the desired affect and turning people off

You got what you saw with Mick Fitz a good strong jockey. Bad jockeys dont ride over a 1000 winners.I agree he"s not easy on the ear but he makes some very good points at times post race. What about Weaver, Francome, Harvey and that big pig Big Mac they seldom tip a winner between them.
Report skerries May 10, 2012 11:00 AM BST
when he is with the bbc he is fine as clare balding does the presenting and mick is there to give his views on the race as a ex-jockey, with atr they send him and a camera man to a racecourse and expect him to carry the programme for 4 or 5 hours, he is just not up to it but fairplay to him for sticking with it.
Report loper May 10, 2012 2:32 PM BST
Skerries is correct. I thought his performance during Aintree was excellent.

It may be that (understandably) he was up for the high profile nature of the broadcast and prepared himself better.

Spending 5 hours at Hereford with the hassle of a 4+ hours return journey and a plethora of 0 - 95s to waffle about is hardly inspiring, especially with a similar day at Folkestone on the other side of the country to follow next day. Not an excuse for a so called professional, though.
