Does anyone know how much you can get on in a single betting shop without the bet being phoned through? Also are all bets across the country recorded real time on a central computer to check liabilities? Any one got any insights in this field they would be willing to share.

obviously depends on the firm mate.

Shops will have different levels as well.

im pretty sure hills arent able to check liabilities thru the computer system but laddies may be able to. Hills somes have to ring in bets after they have been taken to inform the trading room.

Only way to get a decent bet on, is to make your stakes small and go from shop to shop.

most shops well take a Fiver as long as its not P/WsLaugh
Report IanP May 7, 2012 9:52 AM BST
Some Korals shops are as low as a maximum stake of £10 on anything early in the morning.  Apart from the fobts that is !!
Report frog2 May 7, 2012 10:00 AM BST
So a max of £10 per selection per shop without it being sent back to head office?
Report lineuk May 7, 2012 10:06 AM BST
Depends Frog, if you bet in the same shop week in week out day after day they might let you have 30quid on, but if you go in only go on a sat more likely you get a fiver on.
Report indybookie May 7, 2012 1:11 PM BST

Get yourself on track mate. Those bookies will lay you a fortune if they don't think it will win.

Report SlippyBlue May 7, 2023 5:55 PM BST
If you go around the shops, the ever diminishing number of them that is, would you not be open to handwriting surveillance? They do share facial images and examples of previous slips as far as I'm aware anyway. I'm sure Ronnie would know.

Only messing slippy but ronnie did mention doing affordability checks in his shop so a worry for those that use them I suppose.

Imo there will be few shops to worry about in terms of betting on racing in less than 5 years.

My business model nearly 2 decades ago was to buy up independents, fill them with FOBT's as allowed, take only minimum trebles and have no live TV.

Back here somewhere, stated would not do it from a moral standpoint but it was there to be done.

Pretty dire then Ronnie, less than a thousand slips on a guineas day regardless of results does not  cover the rent?

My partner told me we took £186,000 on the Guineas today compared with £24K on the whole of Newmarket outside the race, that said way down on any previousInternationally the meeting is a non event, domestic it must be a loss in UK?

They`re always arguing in my local baldies.
Report Regbutler May 7, 2023 9:35 PM BST
I could get on 100 or more to win or e/w 2 or 3 times in a half hour period on say, a 5/1 shot in my local baldies shop every day of the week
Just gotta be a bit cute and target the newer employees
I could then repeat the same at several other nearby shops
Report Regbutler May 7, 2023 9:41 PM BST
By that, I mean that some of the newer employees are directed by liability charts not that they would necessarily understand them
And going back to the counter several times would not arouse suspicion
Didn't mean to imply I was taking advantage

Has anyone ever bet with a bookie in USA or Australia? I think they are obligated to take bets unlike the majority here.
Report Trident May 8, 2023 1:06 PM BST
Go from shop to shop, does work. Effectively, you can have a decent wager. Try not to go into the same company over and over though in the same day. Split between bookmakers.
Report michael59 May 8, 2023 2:32 PM BST
ronnie why should a punter tip betting shop staff for just taking a bet and if it cops you pay it out ? back in the day if i nicked a half point yeah always gave a score but now days you get no help from the staff
Report liberator of the oppressed May 8, 2023 3:22 PM BST
michael because ronnie seesm a very nice bloke in comparison to some others who frankly are less helpful if you know what i mean.
Report comingupthehill May 8, 2023 4:03 PM BST
Impossible123 - I think Aussie bookies have to lay upto 1000 payout on any horse as part of their licence. USA is tote.

As for tips on winnings,
I believe on every winning bet, there should be the option to round the winnings down to the nearest pound,if. Winnings  more than 20quid.
Example win 27.36. Collect 27. The 36p should then be given to the injured jockeys fund/reabilitation of race horses, same for dogs.

It should be called the coppers for croppers scheme,no one really wants the loose change,so this could be donated to the jockey horses who provided that win.
Again it would be optional, and on line you could set your account to do this..

It’s now happening in tescos Asda, when paying, asking for a charity donation.

Saves the staff messing about with loose change and supports racings charities.

Easy to implement,I reckon 80% would donate this.
