When is he ever going to tip another winner???
To day he picked Get Me Out Of Here---- a horse by Accordion who had never ever run on heavy ground--- no wonder he was a non runner.
He seems to have lost the plot.
Anyone know when he last tipped a winner??

Irrespective of his overall record .... That was  an utterly awful selection.

So many negatives against it

As you say - Never run on ground anything like today's HEAVY -
- and the only time it had run on anything softer than GOOD to Soft, in the past 12 outings ... Get Me Out Of Here finished 8th on SOFT ground.

Neither it's Sire, nor Dam's Sire, have shown any preference for HEAVY, or Soft, ground, over any other description.

Add to the above - trying 3 miles for the first time - and in such testing conditions.

And to top it off - Up against TWO of the TOP Hurdlers in Ireland, too - and both getting a 7lb Mares Allowance into the bargain.

Something of a climbing Everest job.
Report siralex April 26, 2012 8:44 PM BST
i couldnt agree more, it was an awful selection. the problem is quite simple, he is not allowed to say no bet.
he wouldnt put up an even money or 5/2 shot so was always going to put up something else. he should have put up say 0.5pt e/w on one of the outsiders if he was going to have a bet.
but even if u follow him religiously like i do u have to be aware that today was not 1 u should be lumping on. i had 24 e/w rather than my normal stake.

alex I know my thread is taking the p!ss but you are a brave man following him, I don't mind the 20 runner handicaps but the 1st and 2nd in that race today were huge odds on to be in the first 3, head scratcher for me that one
Report siralex April 26, 2012 8:50 PM BST
exactly, the only hope was getting a palce and even that was only to make a small profit.
he has had a few when they havent been fancied in high quality races which have won so i wouldnt just not back them but almost always decrease my stake on bets like today.

When I look at it Vidou it says APRIL 7 --- Hay Thimaar 5/1-- I looked and finally found Thimaar on RP site-- a winner at Kempton in a flat handicap.
Report vidou April 26, 2012 11:01 PM BST
Yes mate of course you're right - They got the course wrong that day, I thought you hadn't seen the winner but they did credit him with that- just wrong course and time. BTW the guy who posts that stuff actually says on the site that he'll either post on his way home or first thing in morning, so I assume he a London night worker who gets the one first copies of the RP to hit the streets. So can forgive the odd mistake.

Anyone who genuinely thinks that this column exists to benefit punters needs to have a sit down and think about what the RP's commercial objective is in running it, and what the bookmaking industry's might be in continually volunteering their prices..

It's naive beyond all belief to think that the answer to either is followers making money, imho...

TOM SEGAL - says ...

"Finding winners is a tricky game at the best of times but I know the exact reason for my struggles -
- it's because I'm a contrarian.
However hard I try, I cannot make myself do the obvious.
Instead I have to be a smart arse and if I have a history with any horse then it is even worse.
If I have backed them before and they have been unlucky or ran well, then I can't make myself  back that horse again when the cat is out of the bag and they are a much shorter price.
In recent weeks Always Waining won his third Topham Trophy at a double-figure price, Merigo won his second Scottish National at rewarding odds, and the horse I backed at a big price to win the consolation Lincoln, Captain Bertie, landed the Spring Cup.
Without trying to denigrate anyone who backed those winners, it really didn't take too much imagination or thought, yet you would have been handsomely rewarded on each occasion and I couldn't bring myself to back any of them.
In any walk of life, whatever you do, you cannot blinker yourself from the blindingly obvious, but that is what I have managed to do in recent weeks and my bank balance has suffered as a result.

It's the same in the Grand National.
Looking back over the years I can see that I have really struggled to back horses who had previously run well in the race, whereas I am happy to back those who have had a bad Aintree experience, and it is clear to me now that I have been trying to be far too clever in these end of season staying chases.
Hopefully that will change  at Sandown come the Bet365 Gold Cup on Saturday, but I very much doubt I'll allow myself to entertain something that doesn't make me out to be a clever clogs.
Looking down the list of entries there doesn't seem any horse with rock-solid credentials and we all know that funny things happen at the end of the season. However, not living far from Sandown, I can't imagine the ground to be anything other than soft which would be unusual  for this race and might well bring into the equation horses like ........

* This is where you cheapskatesGrin will have to fork out your own £2-70 for a copy of the WEEKENDER - to read the rest.
--------------------------------------

TOM SEGAL continues ....

The problem for me is that it doesn't take the Brain of Britain to work that out, so my challenge on Saturday morning will be to let myself back a horse that everyone else fancies.
  It's long odds-on I won't be able to."
---------------------------------------

* So there you have it.

A confessional output of almost Alastair Down proportions.

Full credit to Tom Segal for both admitting to, and writing this.

BUT - Clearly, almost by his own admission, TOM SEGAL's head has been 'all over the place' for the past month, and more.
---------------------------------------

To all you 'follow him over cliffs' - 'blind faith' followers - remember this ....

'NOTHING is ever as it seems'....

- and 'ALWAYS look into a man's eyes when he is talking to you'....

But you cannot do that behind the pages of the Racing Post.SadGrin
