Eight cardiac deaths in 30-year history of the London marathon, numerous injuries, one of
the most dangerous sporting events in the world...

Why are the animal rights activists not calling for this barbaric marathon to be banned??

Medical scientists did an in depth investigation into the effects of humans running extreme distances, using top athletes and amateur runners.{male and female}.

The results showed a number of general trends ...

Women's bodies were better equiped for long distances and eventually would catch men up in marathons etc.

This was due to more fat and water retention capabilities of women's bodies.

The most telling finding was that up to 20 miles most {reasonably fit}runner's bodies could cope...it was the last six miles that was the killer, with people running on non-existent reserves, many failing to complete and others injured and exhausted.

Cue the boggle-eyed,staggering figures of 'fun'runners on our tv screens in the closing stages of marathons.

As any keen ancient historian can tell you the first marathon runner was a greek messenger sent to athens to tell of the famous greek victory over the persian army,on the plains of marathon.
Where upon the exhausted runner collapsed and died.

So we are left with a race that even pro athletes have to train extensively only to run a few each year and countless other 'ordinary'runners are injured and their bodies abused, and some paying the same price as the original brave soldier.

Think about it OP. Probably because us humans have the choice whether or not to run a marathon, animals do not have that choice.

More horses die in their sleep than in racing. I think we should wake them up every 5 minutes if they nod off in their stables, and make them run round a field. Or perhaps not 'make' them - just suggest it gently in a calm voice - no pressure.

Must be the most gruelling of all races, took 11 years for some to finish by the look of it.
