It's the 3.20 being discussed. More about how the race was run. Nephrite has a very strong speed bias in his pedigree, half brother to four winners all very effective at sprint distances. The dam Cape Merino was also a sprinter. So surprising to many of us see the (heavily punted) second string go off like a bat out of hell making it a fast run race and be kept up to his work with very strong driving in last furlong.

The alternative - and less sinister - perspective is that they wanted to see how Nephrite would stay a fast run seven on softish ground to assess whether he was likely to get a mile and be worthy of a trip to the Guineas in a fortnight.

They certainly know now ....
