After having my first real experience of Spread Betting today I'm going to investigate the factors affecting Distance betting and try and figure out which are the most significant.  I'm sure it will be difficult to gain a regular advantage but I think it is worth a go.

I'll be trying to find the types of races where I'll most likely find big distance winners.  i.e. a small field 3m4 handicap chase on a tough course in testing conditions (with a big odds-on favourite). Because I'll be looking to buy the distance in most instances.

But basically, I want to be in a position where I give my predicted average distance for each race add them up and compare them to the professionals.

Anyone had much experience with distance betting? I'm off to number crunch....

I´m just thinking...just an idea....that the traders who price up the market are relaticely lazy and base it on a tried and tested formula.

It'll be a while before I play. I'm going to have to compile a hell of a lot of data for it to be considered semi-reliable!

they ll base it on previous averages/no of runners/ground/distance/field size, then over the long term you ll struggle as the index will have a built in profit .

I prefer to keep a "safe distence" from betting these days except on the exchanges.

what's a "distence" and why would you keep it safe?

I have a database of flat winning distances and the spread is usually right. They might make a mistake from time to time, but it isn't worth wasting time every day in the hope that they do.

thanks everyone.  I'll look at the liquidity on the exchanges.  After the 300quid free total goals bet from sporting index I'll probably give the spreads a wide berth.

I've sold the goals in the Arse - Chelsea match at 2.7

Also had a few quid on the Arse 3-0 and 3-1.
