Afternoon all.
I feel this may be interpreted as a bit of a cheeky post, but I do not have much choice but to ask for help at this stage!
As mentioned in the title I am currently doing a dissertation on racing, and in particular I am investigating systems, and looking into detail at their returns over time.
For example one I gained from a racing newsletter from FlatStats is that if you back all favourites in 16+ runner maidens on turf it yields a strong figure for ROI.
I would appreciate ANY help at all, if it is for advice on where to go or any systems that you have (there is the cheeky bit) but it is for a good cause (research) and my degree!
Any other discussion or help is welcomed.

Nick Mordin is your man, he is the Systems Analyst for the Weekender and has been looking at systems and their returns for years.
Try to get your hands on as many old copies of the Weekender as you can, imo. |

Chuck your systems in the bin, Form analysis and Speed figures are the way to go!

surely knowing your trainers behaviour is a system , form analysis is fine but knowing when the horses are there to do their best is often more important! |

There's millions of them. You might as well do your dissertation on 'people' and 'what kind of lives they have'.
Perhaps what you might study is the range of strategies that purveyors of sytems adopt to get punters to subscribe to them. You could investigate the phenomenon of 'Tommo' and how he's managed to get where he has. He is regarded, by some, as the 'face' of racing. He has his own tipping line(s). |

a lot of people make the mistake of back dating systems to fit certain criteria that can't be reasoned with logic. most of these trends will balance out in time.

I will try to get in contact with Nick Mordin and check out that site, thank you! I personally loath people charging for these systems and eBooks etc and I have even found a video on people explaining how easy it is to do on Youtube, ridiculous! And to SR, I would not consider using these in my betting! I am a huge advocate of Form Study, I love it! But taking the 'opinion' and personal opinion out of form means it is easier to study mathematically! |

form is all well and good mate we can all see whats there in the book can't we.
stats that indicate long running trainer biases in the way they operate though can help determine when the horse is there to do its best and when its there as part of a longer term plan with the trainer. thats a system but based on trainers individual traits not a blanket back blah balh in blah balh races if blah blah. |

I understand it it s controversial topic/way of betting and as I mentioned it is not one I would use, but doing it like this means I have the opportunity to do my dissertation on racing, and that will get me through it!
But basically I am just looking for systems with a final positive return over the long period so that I can do a pannel data regression on the return on government bonds. |

But surely you're screwing your returns before you start. The only way to choose a system that you know will have a final positive return over the long period, is to pick one from past results, but 'the long period' will be a period in the past. It is extremely easy to invent a system that shows a profit on past results.

That is what I am wary of Striding, hence the mention of being cheeky, but I am hardly planning to stake all of my student budget on it and I can make sure the final copy will not be made publicly available.
With regards to the viability of the systems I am not fussed, all I want is one with positive returns using past data. |
