How many fatalities at the first though...? If you have 40 runners in a marathon all running in confined space, one will naturally bring down another or cause them to have less room to spot any obstacles. If you have 30, more space, more time to react. They need to do something and i'd be surprised if this wasn't the answer.

Which would then mean that 10 instead of 20 would've fell/PU/BD/refused. I don't quite think there is any common sense in your reply? Naturally there will be 39 after first horse fell and 38 after second and so on....

Simply pointing out that there are fatal accidents in the national even when the field is reduced to 20. Ergo, the problem is not how many runners there are.
