totally agree johnny wasnt much need for it after winning a national....if i was chemical nicky id be a bit pissed at dat tbh....it just sums nicholls up....
To be fair, it was said in a jocular manner but did n't come across well - he did have a mike shoved under his nose within seconds/minutes of the photo announcement - I'm sure he'd give a more measured response with more time to reflect.

NJH will surely walk the trainers title next season though with all the class horses there nicholls will have a lot less ammo than of late and that will irk the fat smug man as his pr machine will have to work a bit harder to get his owners to buy him some more. Sorry just cant stand the bloke or anyone connected to him.(apart from hales who has some class in retiring neptunes) bet pfn will try get him to change his mind

Richters.....a satellite yard is when somebody with a fat head takes credit that he shouldnt.....horses are trained in a fat heads name even though they are 30 miles away.....it allows people to pretend that they trained a champion hurdle winner....

Never been a fan of Nicholls and I can see where you are coming from but having said that nice to see an honest comment slipping out from the bag of wind. Much better than 'Nicky's a super bloke and a great trainer.....blah blah'.
What has Henderson got to do with my OP, pedrobob? Nicholls proved himself a classless, graceless victor. That was my point. This is a man hellbent on winning and who will clearly go to any extreme to try and secure the title. I'd suggest his single-minded, obsessive ambition comes before the welfare of his horses at times. He lacks magnanimity which makes him the worst sort of 'champion'.

The point has been made already on this thread that Nicholls had just won the biggest steeplechase in the world (and possibly the most famous horserace in the world) for the first time and yet, pretty much his first thought, was for how the rersult affected his personal duel with Henderson for the CT! FFS how self-absorbed must you be for that to be your first thought on such a momentous occasion?

Nicholls has lost plenty of horses on the racecourse, and probably on the home gallops too.
Anyone who works with animals on this scale knows this is part of life and they just have to get on with it.

A win at all costs mentality was shown up in that statement. Not the first time this has been seen in Nicholls, if you've followed NH closely over recent years.

I totally appreciate the context, pedro, and you cannot justify it regardless of just winning the GN.
Losing a horse like that must be so distressing for any owner , if it was mine and i was told to grow up and get on with it i would most likley lose it .

pedrobob-My horse was put down after being kicked in his field it was unfortunate. The GN is now becoming unacceptable to many people. It is not a fair test and if we want to save NH racing then we have to make drastic changes. Nicholls needs to make a statement tomorrow to correct what he has said.

steamship, what is your understanding about the context of what Nicholls has said today?
Animals do not have souls. We attach attributes such as brave, clever, genuine as if they are human. We delight in the speed and agility as the skill of the jockeys combines with the natural selection which enables one to be faster than the other. I have owned racing animals who have died competing and you do get attached which leads to an irrational level of grief which I am afraid to say was greater than an octogenarian grandad's death. We're a weird lot.
Yes I have owned plenty of pets and had to have them put down at times - suffice to say on every occasion the vet hasn't turned round to me and said, whilst ive shed a tear and said my goodbyes with 'grow up and get on with it'. That's would be unprofessional right?

I have, pedro - lost my beloved English setter recently at a tragically young age. Don't really get what relevance that has to justifying Nicholls callous and arrogant statements today.

pedrobob- i'm sure he is caring but what a thing to say. If he had said it to me and you in the pub then fine, but this is our Champion trainer who loves nothing more than getting his face on tv and representing the sport, and yet falls for that.

The BBC closing vision of a disappearing Ms Balding almost depressed beyond belief being replaced by a cloudy Liverpool sky as if searching for the souls of the departed. I almost convinced myself that synchro and Pete shaped clouds were up there. Thommo and C4 ? This became a beeb hospital pass.

pedrobob - more likely that Nicholls would be too shamefaced to repeat some of the comments he has made today and throughout this season imo. Aside from what he said after the National, who can forget his handling of the Kauto Star schooling fall or his public and wholehearted support for the new whip rules?! I'd love the oportunity to quiz him about these things and more.
I have a feeling that it is the initial comments which show Nicholl's true feelings, not those made after the entourage has had time to regroup and someone has had time to point out the error of his ways. Given what I was listening to on Breakfast News this morning in the light of what happened yesterday only a complete idiot would not realise his comments about the National were a PR disaster.
He is just giving honest answers, bored to death of hearing the brainless robotic answers they all give in interviews, let's hear what they really think for a change.
