"Any good race would do, but this is the race we wanted."
The Alex Ferguson of NH racing. Does winning the jump trainer's title matter that much? No doubt if NC was beaten a nose, Nicholls would have had him out again in the Scottish National, along with countless other horses of his, despite gruelling seasons, in pursuit of the required prize money.
totally agree johnny wasnt much need for it after winning a national....if i was chemical nicky id be a bit pissed at dat tbh....it just sums nicholls up....

To be fair, it was said in a jocular manner but did n't come across well - he did have a mike shoved under his nose within seconds/minutes of the photo announcement - I'm sure he'd give a more measured response with more time to reflect.

To true. truly horrid man. NJH will surely walk the trainers title next season though with all the class horses there nicholls will have a lot less ammo than of late and that will irk the fat smug man as his pr machine will have to work a bit harder to get his owners to buy him some more. Sorry just cant stand the bloke or anyone connected to him.(apart from hales who has some class in retiring neptunes) bet pfn will try get him to change his mind

My deepest sympathies to you for being such an ardent fan.
Nicholls will probably bring back KS yet for another tilt at the KG. Surprised he hasn't got Denman patched up to race again.

OP: what is your point? What a load of nonsense. Just won The National after thinking his CT was down the drain. And why would he take NC to Ayr had he lost? Rubbish.

Richters.....a satellite yard is when somebody with a fat head takes credit that he shouldnt.....horses are trained in a fat heads name even though they are 30 miles away.....it allows people to pretend that they trained a champion hurdle winner....

I have a great life thanks fb. It was a tasteless comment - if you can't see that then more fool you. Try posting something more intelligent in future by way of a response. Thanks.

Remember- This is the man who once said of the great Moscow Flyer "We put him on the floor..." when Azerty beat the great one.
Excuse me....

so you would rather have a trainer like Henderson win the title? A man who left his assistants and vet (lost his livelihood) to carry the can for drug offences? Who laid all his horses to lose at the 2011 Festival? Who f**ked up the appearance of Binocular in the 2011 Champion Hurdle?
Henderson has as much loyalty as a turkey chef on Christmas Day.

Never been a fan of Nicholls and I can see where you are coming from but having said that nice to see an honest comment slipping out from the bag of wind. Much better than 'Nicky's a super bloke and a great trainer.....blah blah'.

What has Henderson got to do with my OP, pedrobob? Nicholls proved himself a classless, graceless victor. That was my point. This is a man hellbent on winning and who will clearly go to any extreme to try and secure the title. I'd suggest his single-minded, obsessive ambition comes before the welfare of his horses at times. He lacks magnanimity which makes him the worst sort of 'champion'.

Nothing to do with Hendo - not relevant to the post. It's about Nicholls. And nothing to do with not liking winners. There's a way to win, and to lose.

How do you build a vitriolic character assassination out of that?
It's blown Nicky Henderson out of the water now.is that the comment you are objecting to, johnny? How do you build a vitriolic character assassination out of that?
The point has been made already on this thread that Nicholls had just won the biggest steeplechase in the world (and possibly the most famous horserace in the world) for the first time and yet, pretty much his first thought, was for how the rersult affected his personal duel with Henderson for the CT! FFS how self-absorbed must you be for that to be your first thought on such a momentous occasion?

yes, pedro - showed him in a deeply unflattering light - as Gerry G articulates above. What's wrong with it, is that he puts winning above everything else, including the welfare of his horses imho.

at least you concede it is only your humble opinion, johnny, and not fact. I doubt you would have the nerve to say that to his face.
Are we are talking about the same person who retired Denman as a "young" 11yo and done similarly with Neptune Collonges today?
I have heard of other trainers (some of them in the top flight) who are quite happy to run their horses lame. Don't think I could accuse Nicholls of that.
If Nicholls didn't care about the welfare of his horses, doubt he would have so many female staff working for him, who are much more likely to be horse lovers than their male counterparts

It would be like Messi scoring the winner in the CL final for Barcelona against Real and for his first comment to the post-match interviewer to be something like: "This means I'll probably beat Ronaldo to world player of the year now."
It was a really crass thing for Nicholls to say imo - especially as at that point in time virtually no one else cared about the trainer's championship except for him!

"It's a massive, massive team effort. All credit to all down at Ditcheat."
A comment you hear from Nicholls regularly..... but rarely passes the lips of Henderson

Nicholls has been written off in a lot of quarters this season,he was entitled to say whatever he wanted,an "up yours" to all his detractors if you will.

What a lot of drivel, you 'protestors' are far too precious.
Nicholls is a winner and he clearly enjoys being top of the tree. He'd spent the previous two hours seeing his Champion Trainers lead being cut bit by bit and the fact it means something to him shouldn't be criticised for gods sake! But as has been said already in this thread, us English can't stand a winner!
Or, apparently, a fat bloke...
Questioning his animal welfare credentials on the back of this comment - now that's truly bizarre.

I don't see the issue here...... Top trainer in burning desire to win shocker!!!!!!
He clearly has massive affection for his horses asleep and he will be made up to have got this prize from Neptune. What a great servant he has been.
At least his yard is a little more honest than Hendo's.

Nicholls has lost plenty of horses on the racecourse, and probably on the home gallops too. Anyone who works with animals on this scale knows this is part of life and they just have to get on with it. No way would Nicholls wish a horse's death on anyone and if you think otherwise, you just have no measure of the man at all

A win at all costs mentality was shown up in that statement. Not the first time this has been seen in Nicholls, if you've followed NH closely over recent years. 'the grow up' statement is a similar sort of thing... appalling arrogance.

Completely insensitive comment in light of today's events.
Does nothing for the image of National Hunt racing - asking people to grow up who dare to criticise? That's a real grown up approach.
The guy has gone down in many peoples estimations after today's performance.

Losing a horse like that must be so distressing for any owner , if it was mine and i was told to grow up and get on with it i would most likley lose it .
I dont know him , and no axe to grind either but it does give a measure of the man pedrobob
The racing world has been robbed today and any follower would have been affected by todays events in some way and i would have thought HE would have been more affected than most .

ranjam and johnny. Have you ever owned a pet or animal of any description? Death comes to us all, and sporting animals have a shorter lifespan than most. If you think Nicholls couldn't give a toss about any of his horses and they are just meat through a factory for him, you have not got an earthly clue

pedrobob-My horse was put down after being kicked in his field it was unfortunate. The GN is now becoming unacceptable to many people. It is not a fair test and if we want to save NH racing then we have to make drastic changes. Nicholls needs to make a statement tomorrow to correct what he has said.

Animals do not have souls. We attach attributes such as brave, clever, genuine as if they are human. We delight in the speed and agility as the skill of the jockeys combines with the natural selection which enables one to be faster than the other. I have owned racing animals who have died competing and you do get attached which leads to an irrational level of grief which I am afraid to say was greater than an octogenarian grandad's death. We're a weird lot.

Yes I have owned plenty of pets and had to have them put down at times - suffice to say on every occasion the vet hasn't turned round to me and said, whilst ive shed a tear and said my goodbyes with 'grow up and get on with it'. That's would be unprofessional right?

Ranjam, but you did grow up and get on with it, didn't you. You went out and bought another pet, no? If you didn't accept the death of a pet or animal, you'd probably never buy another one. That's all Nicholls is saying, not that he doesn't care for animals.

I have, pedro - lost my beloved English setter recently at a tragically young age. Don't really get what relevance that has to justifying Nicholls callous and arrogant statements today.

ranjam, I hope you don't trust the words of some journo who sticks a microphone in front of everyone for a comment. I think the accusations on here of Nicholls being an uncaring, horse hater are getting a bit out of hand, don't you?

Nicholls comments are indeed callous & insensitive & sum him up well.
All the pathetic apologists in the world won't change that. It's nice that there are people who try though, he's probably had far too much champagne tonight to bother himself.

pedrobob- i'm sure he is caring but what a thing to say. If he had said it to me and you in the pub then fine, but this is our Champion trainer who loves nothing more than getting his face on tv and representing the sport, and yet falls for that.

steamship, as pointed out earlier, Nicholls has to live with a microphone attached to him for his every comment. No.1, I'm sure he will be gutted that others have lost horses. No. 2, I'm sue he will be reacting very strongly to anyone who suggests that the Grand National should now be abandoned because we lost horses today.
I'm even more sure that if the full context of his comments were not presented rather than "packaged" by some headline seeking journo, we would not be discussing this on here.

The BBC closing vision of a disappearing Ms Balding almost depressed beyond belief being replaced by a cloudy Liverpool sky as if searching for the souls of the departed. I almost convinced myself that synchro and Pete shaped clouds were up there. Thommo and C4 ? This became a beeb hospital pass.

ok, let's get some balance here. Took me one minute to find the following:
Nicholls to Henderson: “You’ve won the title — I’m dead and buried now.” Sounds pretty gracious to me....
.....following the death of Synchronised and According to Pete as he protested almost helplessly: “It’s the tragic side of the sport...."
You can find words almost anywhere on the internet to fit a preconception about anyone you don't find favour with. The posters on here criticising Nicholls would walk away in shame if asked to repeat their comments to him face to face

pedrobob - more likely that Nicholls would be too shamefaced to repeat some of the comments he has made today and throughout this season imo. Aside from what he said after the National, who can forget his handling of the Kauto Star schooling fall or his public and wholehearted support for the new whip rules?! I'd love the oportunity to quiz him about these things and more.

I have a feeling that it is the initial comments which show Nicholl's true feelings, not those made after the entourage has had time to regroup and someone has had time to point out the error of his ways. Given what I was listening to on Breakfast News this morning in the light of what happened yesterday only a complete idiot would not realise his comments about the National were a PR disaster.
