THE TIME HAS COME TO BAN STEEPLE CHASING HORSES SHOULD NOT BE FORCE TO JUMP LARGE OBSTACLES AT SPEED FOR SPORT

ive said this last month too yes we know horses can break a leg and die on the flat  and horses can have accidents over hurdles but its far safer than jumping a large fence the time has come

plus it would be better for the sport if thier was just one jumping discipline it means sprinter sacre would be 2 mile hurdling

big bucks would be up against horses like long run in the 3m division over hurdles plus it may attract trainers like ap o brien to run horses like flame and glory over hurldles as you would imagine thier would be more prize money around and more prestige

This is why I hate the Grand National so much...

You get total Lemons piping up with opinions on a sport they watch once a year. The GN is an awful representation of National Hunt racing, and it just gives people an outlet to have an opinion in something they no nothing about.

Messi that aint aimed at you, as I clearly know nothing about you, but I just know im going to have ****'s at work asking questions all days at work on Monday...

I have loved and followed horse racing for fifty years. I never thought that one day I would find myself in doubt as to whether the National should exist. I now ask myself this question. Is it Steeplechasing, or just the National that should be put under the microscope? Contrary to all I ever really believed in, I now consider the race to be a tradition we cannot afford to keep. I attended Aintree today, more because of Oscar, Ruby, Zarkandar, Sprinter and Simonsig. That to me was the reason for being there. The National was nothing more than a cavalry charge where the best horse did not win. It attracted morons from other planets, who knew NOTHING about horse racing, there just to get pissed and talk filth. I dont think racing needs it. Horses die sometimes, a sad fact. If I were to ask for odds about a fatality in the race I reckon the odds offered by any bookie would be well odds on. I say that just to prove a point. IT IS THE NATIONAL THAT IS THE PROBLEM, NOT STEEPLECHASING.

I'm sure those arriving at the main entrance via the station noticed the protesters today. Mainly girls in their late 20's and 30's. In appearance I would describe as ' earth women' or hippies; would not be hard to imagine them partaking in night orgies in the woods watched only by owls, bats, mice and hedgehogs.

They had the usual placard picturing a horse with a broken leg along with drawings of gravestones ect  Could not help thinking how ironic it is that while those racegoers walking past them would not want to see any animals killed, the protesters themselves would most likely be hoping for a couple of high profile fatalities - and ultimately they got what they wished for.

How effective these groups are depends on how much support they get from the mainstream press, and while I don't think the general public contain a higher number of anti-racing people than say in the 70's; I do fear a relentless campaign by one of the major daily papers could finish of NH racing as we know it.

Steeplechaser is not to bad a life really for a stock animal.

Interesting facts

In the past 5 years (1860 days) including today, 860 horses have died on British racecourses. Clearly most of these have been in National Hunt races but a surprising number on the flat.
26 horses died at Aintree/40 died at Cheltenham and 37 died at Sedgfield.

It seems that the ones at Aintree get the most publicity for obvious reasons but I think the public would be shocked by the overall figures.

As the above poster points out this debate is driven by emotion and it is totally irrational. The same people who by choice would walk past a shop selling genuine free range eggs in order to go to a supermarket flogging battery eggs because they are 50 pence cheaper have the nerve to pontificate on such issues? It is total hypocrisy. There isn't a single horse alive which jumps unwillingly. I've seen jockeys cajoling countless horses at the start of races which have planted themselves and refused to move. Grow up and man up.
Report Anaglogs Daughter April 14, 2012 10:13 PM BST
If you ban Steeplechasing you may as well ban flat racing over a mile. It's seems every NH horse has been bred by a Derby Winner or a top class mile-1m4 horse. So they'd be not much call for breeding especially for people who keeps mares to breed with a good staying flat horse
