I agree it should be banned but the best way to vote is to use our option to bet or not on the race. If you want it banned, dont bet on it, simple as that. That will do more than any petition.

Same as Glossy. Even lower fences, slightly shorter and 20 horses (good horses) max.
And make so called experts realise that when a horse throws his jockey off, dashes halfway round the track and sweats up badly, it's probably not in the best position to run a 4 mile+ chase.

I backed the Winner today ,but have been saying for a while that the race is doomed. Attitude's have changed ffs,i love the race but i have seen enough, guaranteed at least two deaths every year enough is enough ffs.

I'm fed up with people saying it's a great race and it takes a special horse to win it. It's not a great race, it's a lottery! And the winner is only the winner by default, by being one of the few horses not to fall or be brought down.
BAN THIS EMBARRASSING FARCE!!!

but yeah race is a freakshow, how well does it promote racing exactly, it resembles not a jot the rest of racing if somebody thinks about getting into it. then the cup winner gets killed....

I don't thinkl it should be banned but should be made safer. I agree with The RSPCA advisory guy who says we need more finishers and no traps on the landing side. Also we need to look at horses that are playing up and running off before the race.We need to think about withdrawing these horses. I think the risk is to great to just ask the vet to have a look then him/her saying the horse is okay. So for me its all about reducing risk.

Like that Boat Race, The Grand National is a shameful stain on this country's moral character.
One for it's unashamed elitist self-indulgence. The other for it's unashamed willingness to send magnificent creatures to the barbaric execution chamber that is the Grand National.
Well done Pom's. I hope you are proud of yourselves.

problem is aintree just too fast a track, and the stupid jocks didnt hepl going off at 100 mph if you made it 5 miles and told the jocks to take it easy for the 1st circuit you may get the horses warmed up and less early fallers may also be a problem with the breed of horse nowadays as they just dont know how to jump like the old chasers did add the speed of the race and you have a recipe of disaster.as for the op the type of person that makes me sick the new twittering quivering wreck that will dismount his high horse when the ref f--ks up a football game on sunday and will mount his new high one.

I wouldn't have responded in the manner you have, but, I can understand your frustration. I have been amazed at the reaction to today's fatalities on this forum. The people in this island of ours are changing, I come from an era where you had to get on with it when things went badly, I'm disappointed at today's reaction.

the horse was very spooked before the race and I know alot of horses get like that but do they know there end is coming, I sometimes wonder in events like the national!

In a race where your hosre is more likely to be killed then win on average something needs to change for the better, changing all the fences would be a good start!

First thing they have to do is lower the fences, far to Big And Scary. Got worse when they lowered the fences?........I aint having that. I love the Race and never want to see it end,but still plenty of work to be done.

Gladiators never fought to the death only on very rare occasions as it was a considered a great waste of talent, the Myth is different just like the Myth that surrounds the national being a great race and not a wasteful contest for animals that are precious too us all.

Can you believe these idiots who are saying if they make the fences smaller it will make it worse?! That's just so ridiculous! Hello.. hurdle races anyone?! How about the much smaller fences at other tracks, do they have more casualties because they are smaller? What utter nonsense!
At least make the obstacles smaller and not as densely packed, so they are softer when the horses hit them. There should be no traps at the other side and the ground should be level at take off and landing.

Highlander.you aint got a clue pal,i have been watching Racing for 30+ years. The National Fences are to Big And Scary and need to be lowered in height.

You ban the National and National Hunt racing will follow. The risk of horses dying in the National seems to have dramatically increased in the last 20 years and is higher than in other races. But there is a risk of horse of dying in any race be it flat or jumps or even on the gallops.
It comes down to what is an acceptable risk? Although many horse racing fans may consider it to be too high in the National but not in other races many who have an agenda against this race and horse racing in general do not accept that any horse should have to face any risk for sport.

just a quick comment before i make my point , and it goes to you acey deucy. your last comment about " not wanting your sort around here is whats going to get the race banned" its exactly what needs to be addressed as the race will be doomed if us as racing fans dont face a few facts about the race at aintree.
Firstly , I think racing fans would agree that the Grand National is not to be confused with "UK NH Jump races" as a whole , statments of asking for NH Jump races to be banned (that are being posted on other threads) are completley ridiculous , its a one off race that happens once a year where 40 horses are facing a test that they would never face throughout their racing life. This really needs to be looked at here as the typical "NON Racing fan" would not understand this.
Secondly, The Grand National happens to be a massive reason on why fans get interested in the business of horseracing and i'm starting to realise that after being hooked on the sports for 18 years. This evening, for the first time in 18 years, im starting to realise that the Grand National is just a massive publicity stunt for uk horseracing as a whole, and i think the industry seriously need to start organising a "change" to the format of the race at Aintree.
I asked myself a few questions today with regards to the national.
1.Does every horse in the grand national have a fair chance of winning the race? the answer is a simple NO.
2.Does the best horse always win? the answer is a simple NO
3.why are horses dying in the race every year?
i came up with a few answers for the last question - too many horses in the race - the fences are simply to deep on the landing side of some of the fences - Is it because the old fashion type of "NH horse" is not being bread anymore, where trainers are trying to breed more class into the animals , and to which would have an effect of a horses performance around aintree, ( just something i was thinking of, but not really a fact. - Is there a way where the national can be brought down to a field of 20 runners, where there are 2 qualifying semi final races , and then to have a simalar entry /balloting format as they have for the melbourne cup.
Now , i hope everyone doesn't slag me here as im a great fan of the race in years past, but im just starting to see sense that horses are dying in the race by being brought down by other horses and dying when they have never had a chance to win the race, so the simple fact is that on average a horse is being sent to its death as a certainty every year...simply because of the format of the race.
All im saying that its imperative that the the industry needs to put the thinking caps on to make sure we keep the race for many years to come, we just need to make sure that we see sense. the number of horses running needs to be looked at first in my opinion, i actually think that it could be an idea that any potential runner has to have proved that they have had cleared rounds around aintree, or that they are seriously considered a NH Breed Grand National type, just an idea but probably too hard of a task to determine that.

Rozelkid some good points the one thing I would say is that a lot of the public do to an extent know it's not representative of NH racing.
The build up to the national is all about how gruelling a test it is and how massive the fences are and that's it's a one off.
My worry is that the more you make it like normal NH racing by lowering runners/fences so that it's just another race it may do racing more damage.
It is the shop window to an extent for racing and when a horse dies it gets far more attention than in any other race. People are saying the National should be banned at the moment as it's cruel.
What happens if we have a 26 runner race over 4 miles and lower fences which is more respresentative of NH racing in a few years. The public will still be watching. Even if the race was safer what happens in a couple of years if (like happened in Dubai a couple of weeks ago for no obvious reason) 3 horses ended up dying? The media attention would be far more focused on the dangers and cruelty of NH racing as opposed to the National and the particular characteristics of the race such as fences, distance etc.

And the more discerning of us are beginning to face it!
what i meant was all the trainers, jocks, ans some owners have this "shut up shop " attitude , where they have the typical attitude of just slandering anyone who tries to get their point across...no matter how they try and get it across.
Its that exact attitude that the BHB have to quickly try and stop, and to admit they are wrong !,
there was a guy just now on bbc reprenting the industry saying " we shouldn't be making decisions " its a small amount of horses....i mean ffs, 4 horses have died in the national in 2 years , i will now never back a horse in the national until the format is changed..simply on principal.
you dont think so, i know so .And the more discerning of us are beginning to face it!what i meant was all the trainers, jocks, ans some owners have this "shut up shop " attitude , where they have the typical attitude of just slandering anyone who trie
Think the Beeb have been "On a mission" to replay this fatalities story over and over again on the news, dont remember them doing that so much all those years ago
The race has got WORSE for fatalities once they started mucking around with the event
Look at the stats for the 50s/60s

but i cant get away from the fact that because of the format, its an actual certainty that a minimum of one horse per year is being put to the slaughter, sorry about that expression but thats what it is.
then the anti racing groups will always have the moral high ground simply becasue of those facts.
I know what you mean though, especially with what happened in dubai last month.
I would like to think their is a technical solution to this issue...but maybe thats just the nature of horseracing, and on a overall percentage of horses who are fatally injured every year has to be looked at against the large amount of horses who are fine, is it just common sense to just accept it?
its just that stats thats bugging me ...of it almost being a certainty that a horse will have to be put down in the national race every year.
In my opinion i think the Grand National is in a bit of trouble, and i cant see how they can get out of it unless they change the format of the race.
