Jo o Brien is in my opinion a very effective jockey especially for one of such limited experience. He does however need to spend some time in america austrailia to develop a "clock" in his head.He just lacks the tactical aptitude of other jockeys and he wont get this riding for his dad all the time.Thoughts anybody?

Too young for such a high profile job , will cost Ballydoyle at least three Group 1's this season.

In have read some rubbish on here but this is up there with the crassest of topics.

The lad is a teenager. He has one numerous group races and always tries his best. How on eartyh could he win a Breeders Cup race AGAINST US jockeys if he didn't have a clock. I presume you are referring to his ride of a two yeasr old earlier. The horse ran well, was given a chance but was just beaten on the day by a better horse.

Zut alors!

just look back at how many races he has gone off to fast in the last 6 months. I agree he will cost ballydoyle a few races this year he needs to learn the pace he is clueless at the moment.

Shrood outfit like  Ballydole wouldn't ley him ride So You Think in The World Cup if they didn't think he was up to it.
Of course he lacks experience in the Big Races but i think he very talented.

acey do you think he should have won on st nick abbey in dubui, I do.

Maybe!!

No he shouldn't have won on SNA,the lack of pace cost SNA,nothing else,he is not a speedy horse,if they went a decent clip he'd have outstayed the lot of them and got up and won cosily, another 100 yards and he'd have won,i think thats quite obvious tbh

I'm a fan of his but agree he's far too young to be riding all the big guns IMO. He's got a lot of talent but not enough experience. He will be winning plenty of group races all season because of the ammunition they have but it wouldn't surprise me if he cost coolmore a few too. He already has in Dubai he should have committed with Sna much earlier.  He's good but is he any better than Colm or Seamie in reality? I'm not so sure and he certainly isn't in the same class as R Moore.

You should draw this thread to a close with all the bollox about clocks and his youth.

He just lacks talent............no more........no less.He has a clock in his head already..........fitted in Zurich by the worlds finest craftsmen, unfortunately they left the cuckoo in the bloody thing.Same mistake that was made with Frank.

Lester was riding in races when he was 12 years old,Steve Cauthen was born with a Rolex in his head.Joseph N'Obrain would not have been allowed to be a valet for them.hthWink

roderic o'connor in the Irish Guineas, made all, beautiful ride with a great jock in Richard Hughes left in his wake

Only 18-19, can be considered at least the equal, if not better, of Murtagh, Dettori, Fallon, Kinane etc at the same age.

Very well balanced, champion eventing rider, can ride over jumps, brilliant and considerate horseman at the beginning of a great career over flat or jumps, if his weight starts to creep up.

He's not being given rides because his father is the trainer. It's pretty obvious he's already better than Heffernan and the others at Ballydoyle. Do you think the Coolmore breeding operation would put up with a second rater because he's the trainer's son? They ruthlessly culled Spencer, Kinane and Murtagh when they thought they had served their purpose, they will happily do the same to young Joseph if he can't cut the mustard. Can't remember a single bad ride from him where he lost and thought another jockey might have won. The sign of a champion.

Pedrobob,

Yeah, and Cliff Richard's on 40 a day....

His lack of big race experience has seen him drop a good few clangers.

I agree with the guys who've said he'll probably cost Coolmore a few g1s this season. Just hope Stoute has another crap year and Moore decides to take the job with Coolmore full-time.

Joseph is a stylish rider when he wants to be, but still hasn't got it right tactically or when timing the race. That may come with time, who knows. He's still only a kid, makes me feel old saying that and I'm only 4 years older than the bugger.
Report Brother Mouzone • April 8, 2012 1:38 AM BST
He's getting what every Ballydoyle jockey has always got, If he wins it's because he was on the
best horse and it was a steering job, if he gets beat on a prominently ridden horse it's because he went off too fast, if he gets beat on a horse who is closing at the finish it's because he waited too long, if he doesn't get a perfect trip it's because he positioned the horse poorly etc etc etc.

BM he would be fooked in our sort of races.nap

FFS............been outside for 10 mins...........freezing my nuts off..........fire alarm.

Smoke detectors in rooms now?  Fooking too much,I was having a Monte Cristo hanging out of the fooking window............blamed me and threatened to kick me out.

Soon fooked off when I mentioned immigration and showed ID.SadWink

I get the impression he'd be already riding over jumps if it was up to him.
Report Thebumperking7 • April 8, 2012 11:01 AM BST
Think they should look to put Fallon back up if Moore's not available personally. I know a lot of history but you want the best jockeys on the best horses and fallon to me is still up there. Young O'Brien may one day become a top jock but at the mo for me I always have a nagging doubt when he's onboard one of there's,maybe he spent to much time with Frank when he was stable jock Laugh
