"pitch & toss" ....then i got 2 sheets of glass & between em made zig zag tracks with that garden cane wed use as arrows........a long cane along the front ....once removed would set it off...........this was WOODLICE RACING with 4 tracks and trainers talking to the woodlice before the event was great fun..........we tried to "handicap" the winner by removing a leg or 2 as this only caused em to roll up in a ball.... so the winner got the hammer.........in case it was reintroduced at a later date as a "coop"

in the 70-80s on sundays when there was no racing we used to use a monopoly board as a racetrack and use the counters /dog/hat boat ect as horses and have races round the board short race 1 mile = twice round the board long race 2 miles =4 times around the board used to all put a £ in per race and winner takes all ,some big time arguments guaranteed !

Like mange pitch and toss was the first experience of gambling,it was on pain of suspension from school if we got caught plus a smack around the lugs if the old man found out.Not for gambling but for getting caught,he thought I should know better than to waste his school fees.
![]() Luckily the Latin master was a compulsive gambler and he ran a book for all the big races, the only Latin i learned was caveat emptor when I asked for a refund of my stake on a non runner.........first experience of ante post. ![]() |

I was about 9, picked 4 names from the paper and my brother placed a 25p lucky 15 for me.
I had 3 winners @ 5/4, 100/30 and 2/1 and the fourth selection was a non runner. The bookie gave my brother back £1.61 ![]() Even then I knew I'd been shafted and have held that grudge against bookies ever since. ![]() |

playing chase the ace was a blast ! it was a bit like that scene in the deer hunter where they are playing russian roulette, when you copped an ace the roar that went up was deafening and everyone baying and laughing , a few tried to beat the trap by trying to whack thier fingers in and out sharpish but the mousetrap was to quick ,some even just tried to put thier fingertips in and out ,plenty of them blackmans pinches on thier nails
