Someone asked me last night has there ever been a horse that has fallen in the grand national, only to go on to win it in the following year?

Didn't know the answer?

Anybody name one?

Big thanks if you can. It's doing my head in........:(

Quite a few, probably.

One was Manifesto, one of the greats. He won it in 1897 and 1899. In 1896, he was knocked over at the first fence.

West Tip was leading and going like the winner when he fell at beachers the year before he won it

Golden Miller another. He started fav in 1933 (having won the Cheltenham Gold Cup), but fell at the Canal Turn. He won the race in 1934, setting the course record that stood until Red Rum/Crisp race.

West Tip is correct and think it might have been Dunwoody's first ride in the National and he took Beecher's down the inner in the days when it had the bigger drop but the following year he moved out towards the centre, pecked a little less on landing and then won the race, which is when it really starts anyway.

Hedgehunter fell in 2004 won in 2005
Little Polveir fell in 1988 won in 1989
West Tip fell in 1984 won in 1985
Specify fell in 1970 won in 1971
This one could be debatable but
Red Alligator fell and was remounted in 1967 won in 1968
Sundew fell in 1956 won in 1957
Early Mist fell in 1952 won in 1953.
Sheilas Cottage fell in 1947 won in 1948
Golden Miller fell in 1933 won in 1934

A lot more than you would have thought but there is nine for starters

I remember waking up in Intensive Care in 2004 after 2 weeks sedation to be confronted by my family telling me I had to pick some Grand National horses one of which was Hedgehunter. In 2005 I phoned William Hill to back Hedgehunter at the advertised price of 14/1 only to be told that the price was 12/1. Angry I refused to have a bet and then sat and watched him hose up. So I do not have fond memories of Hedgehunter but at least I am still breathing.

40/1 if memory serves ima? That is the price I got anyway, backed it and 2 others, the only reasoning for backing it being the name and the owner was from Scottish decendants.ShockedWink

Ben Nevis is tenuous as he was brought down at The Chair in 1979.
Team Spirit fell in 1960 & 1962 before winning in 1964.
