Terrible Gold Cup back to the Cool Ground days of handicappers.
Report A_T March 16, 2012 3:41 PM GMT
Not a vintage GC but far from the worst.
Report Vubiant March 16, 2012 3:42 PM GMT
Absolutely dire race for such a prize ...As I stated elsewhere -Arkle would 've lapped these plodders.
Staying chasing dying on its feet .

Lets give credit to the horse for his rise through the ranks

thinly disguise as kauto star didnt win so it was crap horse racing is a sport rememember that its thier for all horses in the race to win it a brilliant race i thought
Report Vubiant March 16, 2012 5:33 PM GMT

...I think the better point is that if Kauto Star won it would definitely have been the worst GC ever.
Report OnTheSnaff March 16, 2012 6:16 PM GMT
is andy stewart insane not running big bucks over fences?
i mean,he's won 4 world hurdles now,but the gold cup is the one every owner trainer and jockey want to win,
He'd beat that lot a minute over fences, such a shame!!
Report SteelCurtain March 16, 2012 6:28 PM GMT
the horse sh1ts its self at the sight of a fence better 2 keep winning the world hurdle 4 the next 10 years i guess Laugh
Report neill d March 16, 2012 6:29 PM GMT
Don't rule it out lads, Nicholls has to have a GC horse in his own mind, could be the story of next season
Report OnTheSnaff March 16, 2012 6:32 PM GMT
i don't really see what they have to lose by giving it another go,he's obviously a lot more professional than he was back then,
Run him in the Betfair Chase and see how he gets on,if he cant jump go back to hurdles, simples.
Better to fail trying than not trying at all.
Report judorick March 16, 2012 6:37 PM GMT
got a ridiculously low chase mark like 159 or something

they could enter him for the Hennessey at Newbury and see how he gets on. If he bolts up then go for it, if he resents it go back to hurdles.

As an owner I would want to win the Gold Cup and it is very difficult to find one that can win the race - ask JP McManus who has owned literally thousands of horses over many years and just won it today

Mr Stewart has a potential GC winner jumping hurdles - look at the rubbish he has beaten TFR, Grands Crus, Punchestowns, and this year a mare...

no brainer
Report OnTheSnaff March 16, 2012 6:41 PM GMT
agreed judo, absolute madeness not to send him back chasing
Report Brooksielad March 16, 2012 6:44 PM GMT
silviniaco conti wins the gold cup next year folks
Report johnnyrant March 16, 2012 6:45 PM GMT
Did you ever see Big Buck's jump a fence? He hated it and was as unnatural as you'll ever see. Sending him over fences would be like signing his death warrant.
Report Glossy March 16, 2012 6:49 PM GMT
Too valuable a horse to be throwing back over fences. Like johnny says, he wasn't a natural and clearly didn't fancy them.

Campaign him the same way as this year IMO, come back and win a 5th World Hurdle against the latest new pretender to his throne IMO.
Report OnTheSnaff March 16, 2012 6:57 PM GMT
He won 3 Chases,including a Grade 2 Chase,so there goes you're "he wasn't a natural"
and ruby was only even beaten once on him in 7 of his chase starts,
Sam thomas, nick scholfield and liam heard all beaten on him, clearly ruby is hugely important to this horse, particularly over the larger obstacles.Long Run cannot jump,do you suggest they should revert back to hurdles with him?
Report Glossy March 16, 2012 7:07 PM GMT
He won them because of how well he travels. The fact that he won 2 or 3 chases does not make him a 'natural jumper'.
Report elise March 16, 2012 7:16 PM GMT
there have been plenty of staying plodders win a gold cup

think we have been spoilt in the denman kauto era with having a couple of class animals vying for the race each year, in behind have been the 155-165 brigade waiting for them to move on

be interested in the timeform ratings for the first 4, i don't think long run has been withing 10lb of last yr myself
Report judorick March 16, 2012 7:34 PM GMT
he's about 20lb better than Synchronised

and don't forget he won a Grade 2 novice chase round Aintree beating Albertas Run when he was a 5 year old so you have to be kidding if you think he couldn't jump well enough. Fack me Kauto Star has fallen more than once and Denman too.

If they started training him now and built up his confidence by the time the Hennessey came round he could have schooled plenty

phuck me there is only one Gold Cup
Report Steamship March 16, 2012 7:49 PM GMT
Certainly worth thinking about during the summer. Al Ferof will be the Nicholls Gold Cup horse next season. I think Long Run ran to this seasons form, when you look at where Burton Port finished. I'm going to get studying Uttoxeters National to find the 2014 Gold Cup winner
