but if your strategy/system calls for you to have a bet in a particular race, what does it matter whether you are up/down on the day?

Gambler's on the whole are conditioned to lose meaning they lose at first then get used to it the brain loves routine. Very hard to break a routine especially if it's been like that for say 5,10 years.
I remember a quote which goes like "Gamblers are like a bunch of headless chickens prepared to pay long term for the warm buzz of the occasional win."CryLaughCryLaughCrazyWink

It's hard because you're not supposed to be disciplined. You need to be at one and avoid upsetting your chi with inner conflict. Discipline takes all the fun out of gambling, ride the snake and freedom will be yours.

if you change your mindset you might change your outcome

one of the things that you could try is goal setting using the acronym SMART - google that

There is an old story that says:

A king asked for a champion to rid his kingdom of a terrible monster that was laying waste and offered half his kingdom and his daughter in return

A knight steps forward and offers to slay the beast but in return, he says, he wants the king to place a grain of rice on the first square of a chess board, 2 on the second, 4 on the 3rd and so on all the way to the end...

cut a long story short he offs the monster and it turns out there isn't enough rice in the world (or kingdom) to pay him

So think about doubling that bank once a month or whatever goal you set, every month, how long will it take you to reach your goal?

As I say, change your mind set

Whats discipline got to do with anything,if you don't understand form and have no edge at all, absolutely nothing and that goes for 99% of punters.Shocked

It takes longer to lose .

I think everybody chases to some degree or other. When i was on this site gambling ( i now gamble elsewhere) I was actually having about 100 bets/trades a day which i found worked for me as if youve got any edge and you understand form/odds then you're best trading in lots of markets. i.e if you're getting 6/4 for heads in a coin toss you're best having 100 flips than only 1. Obviously to get an edge and be able to trade in lots of markets you've got to work like a demon and put the hours in but it can be done and imho its actually safer than lumping things (apart from if your names barney curley)

It's a natural affinity not something you can learn, thats the difference between winning and losing.

I think discipline means sticking to the markets/bets where you have put study in and do understand better(and have an edge in), rather than getting involved for the sake of it or because you have one or two ideas and want to test them

ah, aren't you lot sweet.  Thanks for the replies, I know the only person I can blame for today is me.  I just seemed to be on self destruct... didn't help that my last two bets each lost by a hd.  That just felt that fate was laughing at my expense.

I shall see you all tomorrow Happy

judorick..Yeahyeah is a lady and a classy one at that

discipline is hard one..i fail many times, you start well and think you are laughing before you know it, you are behind and chase...i now pick a few races and try to stick to it, but before I know it, I have a footie acca bet on, a darts no chance bet and then i realise i really should leave footie alone and stick to nags and nfl...unfortunately no nfl for 6 months and have to try not to bet on every race when not working...it is a steep hill as so many races and we all love to bet em...i am learning slowly but temptation is so easy to succumb too, but getting there...being on bt vision does not help as i want to watch every race and have to punt to watch em...bloody bt! Laugh

Gl YYW, you will bust the layers soon!

Ignore the concept of value?(you can find value in too many races.
Report Fat Dodgy • March 8, 2012 8:50 AM GMT
it depends why you gamble in the first place, if its to make a living then you cannot afford to deviate from the plan you should have at the start of each day, if its for fun and then you can take more liberties and ride the roller coaster but you will have more ups than downs

i do both with 2 accounts: account 1 is a very serious type gambler who never takes risks double checks everything and only ever bets after doing his home work
account 2 does a lot of IR betting, multiples, will market watch and take a plunge and is prone to outrageous flights of fancy, his bank is much smaller and has to go cap in hand to the account 2 a lot for top ups of indeed a new bank but very occasionally he hits the mother load and its party time, which helps to placate account 1 who can get a tad annoyed at this frivolity

call it the schizophrenics system of gambling but it works for me most of the time
Report onlooker • March 8, 2012 9:11 AM GMT
^ More structured sense - than schizophrenia, Fat Dodgy.

You can kick your Right ankle when some silly bets go T!ts Up -
- whilst still stroking the Wad in your Left pocket, put there by serious, sensible, punting.
Report slothrop • March 8, 2012 9:21 AM GMT
staking - and maintaining stake - is amongst the biggest problems
faced by the punter
grade your selections in terms of quality that might let you gauge quantity - the amount of risk you want
then set aside a minimal amount that you are prepared to sacrifice on the stuff you always half know you should not be doing
