When I first started my apprenticeship at the betting game, I would frequent my local bookies often and you'd get some right old characters in them. A very different sort of person uses the bookmakers these days, hence why I avoid the books at all costs....even if it pissing down!

I used to frequent a bookies that had some very cheap looking pencils tied to the wall with string to stop punters half inching them.
The two roly poly lady cashiers were protected by an iron grill and there was a bare stone floor. No pictures just a crackly voice coming over the blower Funny thing was that the shop was normally packed when for the hackney dogs on a saturday morning |

Last time I was in a bookies few old guys keeping out of the cold, gang of asian youths around the roulette machines shouting and swearing and making sure no one else could play them.Staff all looked as though they were waiting for something to kick off. What a sad end to a great tradition I can remember spending many happy afternoons betting on the horses, looking at the sporting life for the form and enjoying the company of like minded soles.

Ah Boardmarkers..We used to have one who never marked up the non-runners.At close of play (4.08 in the winter - happy days !) We would be straight in the bins for the discarded void bets.It was a busy shop too all £20 win singles and the average wage was only about £80 per week.....

Remember when you used to have a choice of both the Sporting Life and Sporting Chronicle on the walls?

You can't beat good banter about the game with fellow knowledgeable individuals. You could get that in the shops in the old days, not now you can't! All you get is a shop full of mugs pumping those vile FOBT's. I don't really care if they lose their money! If they are playing these machines then they deserve too. My grumble is that they've attracted a new kind of customer....complete morons!

What surprises me when I go in the morning is the number of old blokes playing the Bingo, lucky numbers etc.....you'd think they'd know better.

never forget having a right old barney with a bad blokes cashier back in the early eighties
the rules at the time stated minimum trebles on footie matches and i wanted a single bet so i put down the match i wanted a bet on and deliberately included two fixtures that i knew to be late cancellations due to bad weather abd therefore 'non runners' the match bet was successful but when i went to collect the barstewards refused to pay me out saying the bet had been taken 'in error' never really got over it tbh ![]() so some things are better now i suppose.... |

Lucky Lucan that would put you in your fifties you old ba stard !! Thin and crispy you have just made a statement that shows what has (previously) gone wrong with British racing.Five years ago those old blokes would have been putting on Round Robins,Yankees and Patents on horses.Sick to death of the plethora of non-runners due to 48 hour declarations they have voted with their feet. That was another BHA initiative supported by the Racing Post.

I'm 44 and sneaking into bookies on school lunch breaks there was Life and Chronicle wall to wall, did one have Man on the Spot the other Augur. They were damned smokey places,my Mum always knew when I'd been in the bookies as did my Old man but in that instance somebody had seen me coming or going and snitched on me.

And then Ceefax was invented!! Bill Gates eat you heart out ! Have a go at me for this..30 years ago no-one would know the football results until the end of the 9 PM news on BBC1 in midweek.I still have a mate who used to use the payphone at the pub to phone Anfield to find out the latest score on a Wednesday Evening. The reply would usually be in the fashion of "hang on a second what's the score" to anyone who was watching the game..Priceless and by the way I am doing my conkers since the new whip rule came in....

A sample ...
28 Jul 06 21:56 CRACKERJACK AGAINST THE CLOCK He went early Saturday morning to Hackney dogs in his old Ford Corsair, but when got there he had no money, he had left it at home. He came into the shop with a daft grin on his face. He had raced home to get his money and try to get back before the first race. In his mad rush he had actually snapped the gearstick off. When he showed it to us some wag said 'Never mind Robert, you always wanted an automatic.' ![]() He backed all of Pat Edderys mounts that afternoon in singles, doubles and trebles. He rode 4 winners, and Crackerjack got a new car !!!! |
