CHELTENHAM THE SHOWCASE MEETING, 2011 The Christmas Parties At Cheltenham Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race
The Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority on 27 October 2011 held an enquiry to establish whether or not Mr Paul J McMahon, the rider of the winner, CLONDAW WARRIOR (IRE), had committed a breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 of the Rules of Racing, concerning his use of the whip when riding in the Christmas Parties At Cheltenham Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at Cheltenham on 15 October 2011. The matter was referred to the Authority by the Cheltenham Stewards following their enquiry of the same day.
The Panel considered evidence from Mr McMahon, who is a licenced Category ‘C’ Amateur Rider by The Irish Turf Club, and viewed recordings of the race.
The Panel accepted an admission from Mr McMahon that he was in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2, in that he used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken into account that CLONDAW WARRIOR (IRE) was hanging to the right, the Panel accepted that two hits down the shoulder were for safety purposes.
Therefore the Panel suspended Mr McMahon for 21 days from Wednesday 2 November to Tuesday 22 November 2011 inclusive.
