the final field for this years melbourne cup wont be finalised until after they run the lexus, mackinnon and the victoria derby on saturday at flemington. 130,000 expected to attend, 9 races, every race is a group race with 5 group 1's. its when the cream come out to race.

So some horses will run on Saturday ... 48 hours later then run in the Melbourne Cup ?? I can't believe that ! Maybe we should send our Animal Rights people over to have a word ... |

yep, 3 days later and run in the cup....so you think did it last year, many times the winner has come from the saturday.breed em tough downunder.

big win by americain in lead up race last week, won last year with light weight, Dunaden is 2nd favorite. godolphin have tried 12 times to win it with no luck and stated today they are conveident that they have the horse this year.
its a race that is worth $6,000,000 and is a handicap, the whole of australia, new zealand stop to listen to the race, its a public holiday in victoria, every work place has a cup sweep, over the 4 day carnival they expect, 450,000 people to attend, on melbourne cup morning many people have chicken and champange breakfast and attended by who's who of world racing and the stars. dermott weld and lucus cumni are on record saying they had no idea how huge the event is, its atmosphere makes the kentucky derby and the Arc minor carnivals and its hard to win.they come back each year as do the other european trainers hooked by this event. bart cummings has won the melbourne cup a record 12 times, most of winners have run the 3 days before the cup and many european trainers are starting to follow his lead to lead up races. his achievement is like a trainer winning 12 Arcs . being a handicap it gives all horses a chance to qualify, whether your a bush horse or in a big stable. its not about having the best stayers running to win...its the melbourne cup the peoples race. i hope this helps a few understand the race. cheers |
