I seem to remember not so long ago that some were slating Ian Mongan as never a Group 1 jockey just before he then won the Juddmonte International on Twice Over.
Call me old fashioned but I think it's always best to actually allow someone to fail a task first before actually condemning them for it.

18% chase win stat and 36% win/place chase stat over last 5 years will do for me. So will his successful riding for Macaire at Auteuil and elsewhere "JAMES REVELEY made the most of his French connection to make it back-to-back wins in Italy's most prestigious steeplechase, the celebrated Gran Premio Merano, on Chercheur D'Or (Guillaume Macaire).
Reveley had also landed this €380,000 contest for the same trainer, who he has spent time riding for over the past four years, on Rigoureux last year."

I'm not really sure what people expect but if you ride poor horses then you don't tend to win on that many of them.
From his last 14 rides, he's had 1 winners, a 2nd, a 3rd and 4 finish 4th which on the face of it doesn't look good but then when you delve a little deeper, of those 14 rides 50% of them were in class 4-6 races and 8 of the runners were at double figure prices, including at 28/1, 28/1, 25/1, 22/1, 14/1, 12/1 and 10/1. Then add to that the list of trainers of some of those horse like Mrs Dianne Sayer (x2), Mrs E Slack (x2), M Todhunter, A Parker and P A Kirby aren't exactly known as prolific trainers then none of those rides were exactly bankers on the card.

I think hes quite good at settling a horse out the back and educating it, he is also good in long distance races for chasers imo, gives them time to settle and get some rhythm
can ride from front or the back, I often watch him on unfancied horses were he will try out differing routes on first and second circuits before a fancied ride later in the day
for me jockey are like taxi drivers they can all get you to where you want to go, just some do it faster than others Cheers

so he wins an e180,000 two years in a row, rides for the best trainer in France, has fallen once in his last 28 rides and generally rides moderate horses over here, has a win ratio of 18% and win and place ratio of 36% over the last 5 years and you say he's a terrible terrible jockey. First go to specsavers then book in for a lobotomy and if that doesn't work get the TV repair man in.

Racingguru is correct imo - JR is probably the most improved NH rider in Britain. Admittedly from a low level 2-3 years ago. But greatly improved.
Duvauchelle is correct imo - his strike-rate with ordinary beasts (especially for his old man with his recent run) is more than acceptable.
YHTOD is an idiot imo.
