running businesses, theirs! both are thoroughly fed up with the pathetic whip issue, neither needs to bow to pressure as a result of the ineptitide being shown by our BHA, and neither would any serious-minded, sensible person. unless you know them personally don't comment on such factors as arrogance, self-importance, imperiousness because they don't apply. there simply couldn't be any better exponents of jockeyship and, ironically, both are able to get everything from their mounts before using a whip. the central issue, and heaven knows why the BHA can't grasp it, is the slap(s) down the withers/shoulders. under no circumstances can this be termed as a strike; slapping is about reminding, encouraging, teaching as part of a rythmic build-up, an instinct which permeates through to the horses, with tremendous effect. 'changing hands' means just that, 'come on, I'm asking you to respond' and they do, dramatically. ALLOW SLAPPING DOWN THE SHOULDERS...there's no pain issue, FCS. in summary this whole issue can't addressed becuz the BHA isn't listening, to common sense, but it will have to!
BHA has listened, got rid of final furlong/fence rule, didnt they? 98% of rides seem to be within rules and racing no different...dont see why Sir Ruby should think he's immune to rules of racing.

Agreed Duncan. No excuses now. Ruby broke the rules and then spat the dummy. With the final furlong changes it should be simple for all jockeys to follow from now on.

So, when the horse you back is the one who loses by a nose because his jockey had already used up his seven or eight, you wont complain because you, like the jockies, march to the BHA drum? Tell me another one.

Correct, yank, because that's the rules...the horse beaten by a nose might have won if you had stuck a firework in its ear 50 yds from line but that's not allowed either....besides, i happen to believe that the eighth, ninth, tenth strike with whip makes precious little difference, so, no, i wouldnt be complaining.

So many contradictions in this whip debate. Whilst we are told the whip doesn't hurt we then hear trainers etc talk about cases of misuse of the whip. If the whip doesn't hurt then why have a limit on it's use? Let the horse be whipped as many times as the jockey likes. The BHA has put in the limit and backed it up with severe penalties for exceeding this limit in order to serve as a deterrent however the jockeys don't like it. What we hear from the jockeys is an admission that they are going to continue to break the rules and exceed the limit and because of this, don't want to be punished so severely. The arguments put forward by the jockeys are just not compelling but are entirely based on not wanting to be punished for breaking the rules. If I was a burglar I wouldn't want to go to jail for committing burglaries!

With all due respect, duncan, your view about how much the 9th, tenth, etc. hit with the whip matters is not worth as much as Ruby Walsh or Jamie Spencer's. If you are a carpenter, I will respect your view about how to handle certain woods more than theirs. But they are the jocks.
