Always rated the Americans better, apart from the great Lester Piggott that is.

We have the best jump jockeys
Report herblington • October 23, 2011 2:00 PM BST
We did have the best jockets, now Dettori aside on one of his going days, the rest are well paid average pony riders.

Moore wouldnt last 5 mins outside the UK for example.

We have the best jump jockeys simply because other than France the sport is none existant

The best of the Americans are good but if you watch a lot of US racing as I do you will see that their are numpties riding as professionals over there who make our amateurs look good. And I don`t mean they are non-triers. I mean they are incompetent to the point you are worried they are going to fall off.

in the particular and in response to a comment above, ryan moore has more than held his own when riding in hong kong, in the general I don't think we have the best jockeys in the world at all as only a handful would meaningfully hold their own in hk as for one, they seem to find it very difficult to adjust to the early speed in races and are habitually slowly away
Report Happy Valley • October 24, 2011 7:04 AM BST
i'd say the French riding ranks are very strong but what makes this whole argument very difficult to assess is the different demands posed by the different track configurations common to various racing jurisdictions

for example in aust and hk the tracks are typically tight and so gate speed is paramount, in the uk with bigger tracks and all kinds of ups and downs, being in the van may be a negative

in the US with so much racing on dirt the jockeys get used to riding two and three wide and up on the pace as "speed carries", ie it can be very hard to make ground, but when they ride outside the US and on turf, they find it very difficult to adjust

Well put HV.

I do, however, think the UK jockeys are at least equal to the French, if not better, certainly not worse, but they are definitely better than in any other country. They are regularly called upon to ride in the Far East and as far as the Americans go they are too one dimensional.
I would have a problem backing an American jockey over here but no problem whatsoever backing a UK jockey in America.

Similarly I would have no problem backing a French jockey here or an English jockey in France.

There have been some superb American Jocks who have come over here for short sabbaticals and shown how good they are - Bailey,Asmussen,Cauthen - and those aren't even the most recent who were jus as good.

Historically the best riders ride in Britain and it is still true,it is the variety of courses that makes them the best.
Report blackpood • October 24, 2011 2:02 PM BST
Lester is the best I saw. Present whip rule might not help him though Laugh
Report wildmanfromborneo • October 24, 2011 2:15 PM BST
I agree Lester a great jockey and the fact that this genius of a rider would be almost permanently banned shows what a nonsense these new rules are.
Report brigust1 • October 24, 2011 2:24 PM BST
Bilbo I have to agree about Steve Cauthen. Top class. Bailey and Assmussen well they were Cochrane sort of jockeys. Very good in their way. But I have to agree about Stevie boy. Brilliant.

The best jockeys in Britain are Those that ride here. The same applies to France, Australia,U.S. or any other country.
However, the very best from any country can equal the locals if they go abroad.

British racing made Steve Cauthen a fact he himself acknowledged. When Shoemaker came over he was a fiasco, anyone remember Hawaiian Sound.
Report wolfatthedoor • October 24, 2011 2:33 PM BST
not to forget julie krone.four winners from six rides in the UK
Report brigust1 • October 24, 2011 2:58 PM BST
Absolutely Wildman. I was really classing him as an English jockey. Although he had made his name in the States he excelled over here. He was only young and prepared to adapt.
