Shop around workrider, bought a nice pair of swarovski last year, my dad wanted a scope so said we buy together, got a smaller pair thrown into the deal so if I dont fancy taking the larger ones can take them.

If you're quick off the mark you might be able to get your hands on this beauty:-

Now, this weekend, it’s time for ROSAT, a defunct German X-ray space telescope, to make a re-entry.

Heiner Klinkrad, the head of the Space Debris Office at the European Space Agency, puts the odds at 1-in-2,000 that a piece of ROSAT will strike a person.

having a look at a pair of nikon sporstar 10x 25....anyone tried these at the races....?
Report elise • October 22, 2011 2:04 PM BST
try canons fitted with the image stabiliser, works really well when viewing racing
Report workrider • October 23, 2011 12:49 PM BST
anyone on here use nikon sports 10x 25....what do they think of them for racing...
Report PeteTheBloke • October 23, 2011 1:04 PM BST
10X is hard to hold steady. Go to birdwatching sites for binocular reviews.

Nikon do reasonable ones at all prices.

Always try before you buy. Especially if you wear specs.

Mine are RSPB branded 8.5x42 and they are excellent. The best I've ever tried are Swarovski
but some people prefer Leica. Go to a shop that stocks these and use them as a benchmark to
compare the cheaper ones against.
Report custardcream64 • October 23, 2011 1:07 PM BST
Don't waste money on buying binoculars , simply stand closer to the object you wish to view .
Report unbiased • October 23, 2011 1:16 PM BST
Lightest, and best for racing are the automatic focus bins.No adjustments necessary when switching from infront of the stands to the back straight. They are much cheaper than ther conventional types(I have a pair of Zeiss, but prefer my focus free!)
Still necessary to do a few comparisons, these came from America, were about $95,it all depends on which shop you use,as nearly all are imported.
Report acey deucy • October 23, 2011 1:20 PM BST
I know it looks cool when they are slung over your shoulder workrider, but what the fook is the point of them when you can see everything 100 times better on the Big Screen?
Report TELL DEL • October 23, 2011 1:30 PM BST
the bigger the zoom the harder it gets to view a steady image,
for horse racing 7x or 8x is fine with a field of view x40 or x50,

that field of view enables you to see a fair bit of the action at once.

I've had a pair of Carl Zeiss 7x50 for years, if I was buying a new pair now
I'd stick to 7x50 or 8x40. If you did want a more powerful magnification I'd say 10x max. for horse racing.  Just my opinion......
Report workrider • October 23, 2011 1:33 PM BST
acey i'm of old stock and can remember when there were no big screens ...Laugh....then you HAD to have a pair of bins....unbiased can you expand a little more on the a bit more on those bins from america and are they 10x25 or 8x10 thanks...
Report unbiased • October 23, 2011 1:35 PM BST
Acey ,you are right, mine stay in the cupboard, but if people still like to use them, good luck.

tell dell...thats want i was trying to figure out re the lens ...so are you saying 8x30 or 8x 40 are correct and mean they stay focused when watching the horses out in he country....my eyesight is changing due to age no doubt ..so i'm finding it harder to focus ..my present set are 8x21 .its obvious now i need a new pair with better focus ...any other advice would be greatly appreciated lads...
Report TELL DEL • October 23, 2011 8:58 PM BST
"......so are you saying 8x30 or 8x 40 are correct"

No, I said 7x50 or 8x40.  I've had a pair of Zeiss 7x50 for years,
but if I was getting a new pair now I'd stick to 7x50 or maybe 8x40,
depends on your preference.

Basically 7x50, the first number is the magnification power
(image magnified 7 times more than your eyesight).
And the second number is your field of view.

Generally as the magnification power goes up your field of view decreases.

So 7x50 or 8x40 would give you strong magnification and a wide field of view,
which is just about right for horse racing, imo.

fook it just bought a pair 10x25 ..read a review on an independent review forum ..who said they were great for horse racing ..guess i'll have to try them now ..thanks all the same mate.....
Report TELL DEL • October 23, 2011 9:58 PM BST
^ try 'em and see, 10x gives you strong magnification but reduces your field of view,
it's personal preference really, try 'em.
Report workrider • October 23, 2011 10:15 PM BST
thanks del i'll let you know how i get on with them ...

My old man used to say: never give advice because a wise man doesn't need it and a fool won't heed it.

One way or another, you proved his point for me. I won't bother next time.

You get what you pay for here and if you buy cheap, you will be disappointed. Leica's, Swarovski's or Zeiss are the best IMO. Whatever you do thoug, get a large pair. I use 10x50s and would only move up to 12x50, not down.
Report R Carver • October 24, 2011 12:39 PM BST
My Leica's are 10x50 and are quite heavy and were steep (£1200+) but are worth every penny if you go regularly. I only really go NH racing in the winter (very regularly) and they are perfect in diminishing light. They were expensive but come with a 35yr guarantee and will basically last forever. They are an investment and have paid for themselves.
Report workrider • October 24, 2011 12:56 PM BST
again thanks lads ..pete the bloke sorry if i upset you i never ment to...thanks for your imput..i had a pair of zeiss for a great number of years till they got broke awhile back and tbh they were a little cumbersome....with bigscreens been the norm at most racecourses now  ..i decided that instead of carrying those big ones i'd try the smaller ones mostly for convinence ...no need to pay massive amounts of money for something nobody in our house has the slightest interest in using bar me...so have settled on a cheaper pair ..again thanks to all who gave their time...
