They looked more like slaps to stop the horse lugging left.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Charles Eddery, the rider of the winner, BLIMEY O’RILEY, from two furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he has used his whip with excessive frequency. As the offence warranted a suspension at the upper level, the Stewards suspended Eddery for 13 days as follows: Friday 4, Saturday 5, Wednesday 9, Thursday 10, Friday 11, Saturday 12, Monday 14, Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, Friday 18, Saturday 19, and Tuesday 22 November. Under Schedule (D)6 the rider shall not be entitled a percentage of any prize money

Cheers for posting the offence details, 11KV.
I've not had the chance to watch it again yet, but it looked when he was slapping the horse down the neck about 2f out, Eddery was trying to stop it from lugging left. Another reason why the rules are flawed, imo, they don't distinguish between salps for safety and slaps for encouragement. |
