What is your problem?
I doubt it is anything to do with your browser.
Chrome is the fastest browser in the beta form.
Also get filehippo updater. It will keep all your free software uptodate.

Suspect you:
Have a virus or other malware on board.
Your hard drive is full and Windows does not have enough room to work properly. You should have at least 10% of your drive empty, more if it is a small drive.
Your registry is full of defunct entries.
Get CCleaner and clean the registry.
Run CCleaner to empty out all the crap in your computer.
Get CCEnhancer - this will extend the amount of crap CCleaner will blow out of your computer. You will have to check off the extra functions it gives CCleaner.
If you don't have anything you want to save. Make a note of what you want and reload Windows. This will get rid of all the crap on the machine.
Do a Broadband speed check - put this into Google - you will see what your internet connection speed really is. Many connections are rubbish and are not as fast as they claim. The only one I know is consistently fast is Virgin Media cable.

If you do all this your computer should be faster.
You could consider getting more RAM.
At 4 years the machine is not that old and there is more life in it.

I am not pushing this software but since I got Gruss I almost never place bets without it.
It is £6 a month and worth every penny. There is other software of course but my experience of that is very limited. The horse people I know all use Gruss. You need a decent amount of RAM to run Gruss properly but it is the business.

I have declined ALL Firefox browser UPDATES for some months now.

I am Still using version 3.6 - which is STILL supported (which tells me something) with Security Updates etc  - so the latest is now - Firefox/3.6.23.

I much prefer the Frame/Layout of 3.6 - as I customise it to suit my way of working.

To stop AUTOMATIC 'UPGRADES' OF FIREFOX BROWESRS ... go  to >

'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'Updates' .... then - on the Lower part of the Frame >
Below where it says - 'When Updates for Firefox are found' >

Make sure the Radio Button  is Checked AGAINST - 'Ask Me What I Want To Do'

all those firefox updates piss me off so I use chrome which seems faster anyway
have been getting messages recently something like 'google chrome is using too much memory' but then the pop up disappears before I can investigate further.i think it may be an avg message

I'm far from being an expert onb any of this, but, over the years through trial and error, or by chance,I've often read that either Chrome or Firefox are helpful.
Whenever I tried these in my inexpert way, I didn't get much benefit to be frank.

However, whether it be by luck or coincidence or whatever, I found two things helped my old trashy computer:

Reimage ( I paid in)

and

getting rid of AVG ( and relying on windows updates and Malwarebytes instead).

Btw, Reimage tells me everytime I use it that I need more memory and more harddrive space. Perhaps you do too.

sean

like yourself I am no expert
Malwarebytes is good but its does not protect against getting a virus as I understand it but
it well get rid of one if your computer gets infected
i reckon some proper anti virus softwear is necessary

Most virus stuff comes of porn, P2P downloads and opening dumb attachments. Click this you are visitor 1 million.....
There are two levels of malwarebytes, basic is free, the other is pay.
AVG - some swear by it. Several reviews give it top rating. I have also read people saying it drags their computer speed right down.
Stay off sh1t and you will be unlucky to get caught with crap.
I use Avira. I don't think it is the best but it has caught stuff.

3 things to keep you out of trouble:

1. free version of AVG
2. CCcleaner
3. Spybot Search and destroy

if you get into trouble try using hyjack this but dont go deleting anything until you are CERTAIN

recently got a virus and a trojan horse from you tube which was identified by avg
wanted to watch a film which had been removed due to copyright infringement
clicked on one or two links in there and got landed with 'cross' something or other which tried to hijack my browser and toolbar
avg put it in the virus vault

you need to consider getting another pc/laptop stewart

I may do that wolf. My only concern is I get the same problems with a new laptop. I wouldn't know which way to turn. My local PC shop charges 40 notes per hour. No problem with that, but how much do these 'experts' know after telling me ''we may fix the problem''.

Hope 30 mins to sign on is an exaggeration ffs , i've 3 computers all over 3 years old and it takes less than a minute from cold to log onto betfair , so much you can do to improve your speed e.t.c but if you're ignorant yourself or can't be bothered take it around to your local shop and give them a few quid to overhaul , well worth it  Plain

HAYDEN, I kid you not. I've no idea why but I'm telling the truth. Once I'm signed on and into firefox, (at least 10 minutes to get in there) everything goes well enough.

One of the biggest issues is too much running on start-up , all the programmes you've downloaded in the past will be automatically running on start-up for no reason as you're not using them , my guess is you've far too many boxes ticked.

Go to your start search and type in MSCONFIG , then when the box appears go to start-up and un-tick all the boxes you don't want to run automatically every time you switch on , it's only one element but makes a massive difference when added to the basic maintenance.

Good luck

My 8 year old laptop ground to a halt after a windows update that included their free spyware software. I did a system restore that removed the software and I then turned the Windows automatic updates off.
Laptop is now back to normal and log into betfair is less than 30 secs. I also find Google Chrome a lot quicker than Firefox.

I'm pretty sure that's what caused my problems in the first place after getting advice on chit-chat. Having said that, I'll let mrs stew give it a go. Thanks for the advice,

The latest versions of CCleaner have a function where you can disable programmes at startup.

I had a computer that 15 minutes to get going.
CPU slow - drive full - masses of programmes coming on at start up - never defragged - registry full of defunct rubbish.

Moved to Chrome when Firefox kept crashing a year ago or so and its definitely been much faster then Firefox  or IE and more stable. Not sure what the deal is but Chrome has been sh1te last month or so. Have i5 quad core processor with hard drive virtually free. Is there a chrome version that works better as I don't really see where you have a choice.

thanx for taking the time  to reply, this shows such forums in true light; FWIW I've scrapped GC and installed mozilla, it's working fine but, I've been here before and only hope the slows don't creep in.
is there any benefit getting rid of such as apple on this toshiba lap-top computer, perhaps there is still too much rubbish.
I wish you all a successful day, unless, of course, you take me on with my laying!
incidentally have very few win bets now because, as someone said a few days ago, with the current 'new' ruling(s) racing seems anesthetized with jockeys getting confused as they count, or don't!

CHROME is the fastest Browser - because it is the 'lightest' ...

That means it does not have loads of gimmicky - mostly unnecessary - features like IE - which are mostly geared towards the 'short of something proper to do' gamers and similar social networking sh!te.

However, that means that Chrome does NOT support 'add-ons' very well.

CONSEQUENTLY - I use CHROME for Betfair ONLY .... and, helpfully - NOTHING ELSE-  whilst ON Betfair markets.

Internet Explorer/b] seems to get no quicker, or sometimes even slower, with every release - as they add more of the previously mentioned.... and I BINNED it as far as Betfair went - 4 years ago.

[b]FIREFOX
is BEST for RACING POST - as you can then EASILY download ADBLOCK PLUS - from which you can then EASILY BLOCK ALL the ADVERTS on Racing Post .... most especially the 'Bookmakers Odds' SCROLLING type adverts - which not only SLOW RACING POST down - BUT, crucially, any OTHER SITES that you have open aswell.

FLASHBLOCK does a similar job for the Flash splashes, too.

ADBLOCK PLUS does NOT work with OTHER Browsers, though.

Chrome claim a version works with their browser - but as outlined above, it isn't really compatible - performance wise.

--------------------

Fastest Browsers by order for Betfair.

1. CHROME

BUT - For best performance - Use it ONLY for BETFAIR - without any other sites open on CHROME.

2. SAFARI

However - Sometimes sticks/freezes after a while - this is easily 'undone' with a simple RELOAD Page..... Annoying though, if it happens just before a race, or 'in-running'

SAFARI - being from APPLE - loads your 'Start-UP' with additional crap for mobile extensions, etc - like 'Bonjour' -  along with ITUNES updater search - QUICKTIME Updater etc.

ALL that crap can slow down your initial Start-Up of your PC - and some  is also left running in the background whilst you are on your PC/ Betfair.

BIN the LOT - from Start-UP - regularly check that they have not slipped back on again - as with ALL Start-UP items.

The ONLY ITEM that you need running in 'START-UP' - and should NOT delete - are any items relevant your SECURITY program(s)  ...
such as Microsoft Essentials - or AVG.

[b]3. FIREFOX

I am still using version 3.6.23 - as I prefer the customisation options - some of which are not there on later version - of which some people are reporting problems.

FIREFOX seem to release many BETA versions of Browsers .
Never download a BETA version - simply because it is the LATEST number/version.

BETAS are essentially 'Test versions' - being released to the public - in order to find faults.

After all - How many new cars get recalled during in the first year.

4. INTERNET EXPLORER

Whenever there is a New release - I test it again on Betfair - out of curiosity.

It is ALWAYS STILL the SLOWEST.

Betfair, themselves, have admitted that their SOFTWARE is not written to be 'best compatible with Internet Explorer'.

A double-negative politician's turn of phrase - if ever I heard one.
---------------------------------------------

So -

BETFAIR  - open on CHROME ONLY.

RACING POST open on FIREFOX - WITH ADBLOCK PLUS and FLASHBLOCK

But whatever Browswer(s) you use - and however many you have open ...

You STILL NEED to DO YOUR HOUSEKEEPING REGULARLY -
and DAILY, is best.
By:
racingguru
When: 24 Oct 11 23:02
onlooker  - agree with you about chrome and betfair but having other tabs open doesn't seem to affect it much if you a decent pc - quad core or better and enough ram. As for racingpost I gave up firefox because of the crashes and chrome is pretty good. Is firefox now better on rp with no crashes?

One other thing most people forget to do is to stop the background processes. Start - run - msconfig - start up - uncheck everything except your virus protection and restart - accept when restarts - speeds up the pc but ultimately not enough cores and ram nowadays with websites so heavy is gonna kill the speed of older pcs (4 years+).

True, guru -

But a lot of people asking these kind of questions, quite probably, or in some cases, obviously, do not have recently new PCs.
- And, it  also follows that there will be a big build-up of crap on those computers - if they have not assiduously, and regularly, done good 'housekeeping' on it.

A simpler way of cleaning up 'Start-Up' - and keeping it clean - instead of the 'msconfig' malarkey - which can confuse the least initiated - is to use CCleaner (free download).

When CCleaner is installed on on your PC - OPEN it -  then > Select TOOLS from the Left-Hand Menu ...
That opens up a different display - from which > Select 'StartUp' ...
That will then display everything running in StartUp ...

Simply right-click on each ITEM - and then > Select DELETE.

----- and away they go.

Unlike 'msconfig' - which only DISABLES the ITEMS - and does NOT [b]Totally REMOVE['b] them from 'StartUp'.

You also do not get the ... 'You have changed StartUp configuration' message - or whatever it says - when you next Start your PC.
By:

When: 25 Oct 11 00:37
racinguru - I have outlined my reasons for using Firefox on RacingPost ^ above, earlier.

It allows me to customise RacingPost as I want it .... in many ways -

and NOT how they want me to see it.
