Every owner with a runner in a race should be charged an additional £1,000 entry fee and the BHA place £500 win and place at betfair sp on every runner with the full returns going to the relative owners. This would make it more expensive to run unfit horses, run them under the wrong conditions or just plain non-trying. It would even mean backing their horse off the board woulds cost them. It would be a zero sum game for owners long term.

How many owners do you think you would have left?
By:
the owners could club together and make sure the biggest SP wins
8 runners = 8k 25/1 winner = 25k everyones a winner |
By:
Their expected loss would be zero.
By:
They can do that just now koo. Not easy though.
By:
if you force owners to do that then theres more incentive to cheat surely not less ?
By:
or at least get your mates to lay the 1500 back on another account
By:
under the impression owner could never lay
Harry Findley surely CALLED OVER THE COALS for backing and laying at a net loss |
By:
it was an unwritten rule and frowned upon but not enforceable under the rules of racing.
Now they've made it clear cut and enforcable. To be honest a few might not agree with the rules but you wont get a consensus no matter what they make the rules. |
By:
Koo, all you're saying is they can do something they can do now.
By:
you will practically not be allowed to bet in the race...
as backing the opposition will be considered laying your yard.... unless they expressly permit this.... as currently it is considered the same |
By:
Nobody else have a view on whether a bookmaker should be allowed to lay a horse from a yard where he has a horse in training? If I was still an owner I would mount a legal challenge against the BHA if I was banned from laying and they were not. The Magician, the BHA and many commentators don't seem to think that backing the rest of the field is the same as laying.
By:
Koo, at least you have all of your horses in one yard. Must be a potential headache for syndicates with horses all over the place.
By:
Yes, thankfully this rule change wont affect me, but for some who have legs in horses here there and everywhere it must be a right pain.
I wont be rushing to send one to Richard Hannon thats for sure. If he let me LOL |

has anyone got a link for this on the bha site please?

Must be handy for owners that have pals that can lay horses...

So I can only assume you will be procluded from backing the opposition under the new rule |

By:
Interesting, Magician. Still no comment from anyone about bookmaker/owners. I have Emailed the BHA about this and await their response. Bookmakers have had horses in training for as long as there has been racing and they lay horses every day.

^Sageform very good point. What are the BHA going to do, tell VC that his firm can't price up and take bets on races where he owns a runner? And what about policing syndicates and owners who run horses under another name (Mrs Paul Roy for example). You can't have rules in place where certain owners receive preferential treatment because of who they are. Think the BHA would have one hell of a job upholding these new rules in a court of law...

Ask tracksuit dave what he thinks

Allegedly there is one syndicate/trainer where their horses always seem to attract a huge amount of money to lay them in the place market.

Tell us more De KAISER
By:
If they use discretion when applying the rule it is a good idea but if they go after someone who owns a 5% share in a syndicate that has horses in 20 yards it will be unworkable.
By:
If your part of a syndicate, you own that particular horse in that particular stable and have no association to the umbrella group surely ?

Do like most and register your own horses in someone elses name
