Ive take the view that there is a severe shortage of Group 1 races in Eng/Ire over a mile. Ive had this view for some time and where there are armfuls of races and options over 10f+ , the race planning book is very thin in the mile division. It only comes to light now, off the back on the outstanding Frankel,  that if we are to keep these horses racing in our country,we need to look after them and provide races for them.
Since his trial in the Greenham, Frankel has only ran 4 times this season, and would love to know, that had York Ebor meeting provided him an option of a Group1 over a mile, would Frankel have been there?  I think he would. The poor beast had 80 days between the Sussex and the QEII. A race at that stage would have fit perfectly into his calender.
York have modernised there thinking in recent years and moved with the times, moving from three to four days and moving there showcase Ebor to Saturday. But someone connected with York racecourse needs to grab the bull by the horns and sort something out for deprived miling(hope thats spelt right!) division!
Id be interested to hear other thoughts on this matter!

"His calendar" would have provided for a period of relative rest - and that, for a horse who was being wound up early in the season, and wanted to be around for the big races in the last third of the season, means August is out. You also have the concern that your suggested race has to fit into the European pattern, and would clash with the Prix Jacques le Marois run at Deauville in mid-August, which of course Frankel could have run in, if the poor beast desperately needed a race around that time.

..there's also the feeling that the York ground is sh1t.

I have absolutely no time for milers, they haven't got the toe for sprints or the heart for staying, a complete waste off time imvho.

So ged, you'd be happy that our best horses are running in France rather than England?
Report mightymoyes • October 18, 2011 3:17 PM BST
youre basically looking for more reasons to keep frankel from realising his full potential?!

More than anything, I like to see the best horses race against each other, rather than avoid each other. The more Gp 1 races there are, the more chance they have of avoiding each other. You just cheapen the races. Connections are usually not interested in challenging their horses, but like to pick up the best races they can in the easiest possible manner.

If you ran Frankel in a Gp 1 mile at York in August, you'd have at most 3 up against him - all just interested in 2nd/3rd place. Would it be worth seeing? - not for me.

I think, ged , you may be right on the lack of opposition/runners , but is the Juddmonte International not in the same boat now? Perhaps if the Juddmonte were run over a mile instead, we may attract slighly more runners.Perhaps 7F types may take there chance and 1m2F speedier types might also dabble. Do you think Henry gave Frankel the extended break between the Sussex and the QEII through choice? Or would you concede there are limited options this side of the water?

he wouldv faced different horses in the juddmonte, likely small field to avoid him but on the otherhand, many trainers wouldve wanted to take their chance to try and gain his scalp, o brien being one!!

instead we see him beat excelebration...again!

So for a 4yo colt, there are only 4 races, Lockinge, Queen Anne, Sussex and QE2, with now a very long break between the last 2. At least the fillies also have the Falmouth and Sun Chariot.

The exhaustive list that is been displayed, 5 are open to fillies only and two are open to two year olds. the situation is even worse for fillies. If you win the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, where do you run next?

I think the York International race has gradually declined over the years due to other races being put on, and moved around. When it was inaugurated, it pluggedd a big hole in the calendar, but not anymore. Yes, I think Henry planned the extended break (whatever might have been said publicly). Preparing a horse for the Guineas, with a prep race, and going for Ascot and Goodwood, meant he almost certainly was going to need a break if he was to be at a peak for the QEII, which these days is the primary end-of-season target for a miler, still leaving the Breeders Cup as a possibility.
