ABOUT six hours after Nick Hall copped the biggest fine imposed in Australia for a whip infringement, French-based jockey Christophe Soumillon received a penalty that dwarfed Hall's punishment.
As well as incurring a five-day ban for using the whip six times, one more than allowed under the rules introduced in Britain last week, Soumillon was fined $75,000, his share of the prizemoney for winning the 2000m Champion Stakes on Cirrus Des Aigles at Ascot.
Soumillon was outraged and is considering legal action.
Hall was fined $5000 for using the whip in a forehand manner seven more times than allowed before the 100m mark when he rode Green Moon to second place in Saturday's BMW Caulfield Cup.
"I'm very embarrassed for English racing today," said Soumillon, whose mount defeated $2.75 favourite So You Think by three-quarters of a length.
