Caulfield: BMW Caulfield Cup (Group 1 hcap) 1m4f, turf, 3yo+
FOUR-year-old filly Southern Speed (Craig Williams/Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas) overhauled the former Harry Dunlop-trained Green Moon to take the Caulfield Cup on Saturday.
Tullamore took third from the Luca Cumani-trained Manighar, who did best of the three British-trained runners in fourth place, just ahead of stablemate DrunkenSailor.
Brian Ellison's Saptapadi was towards the rear in the A$2.65 million (£1.7m) event, where the hot favourite December Draw crossed the line in last place after possibly being struck into.
The 9-1 chance Southern Speed, who will now run in the Cox Plate in a week's time, had finished fourth behind December Draw on her previous outing in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes.
"She's not in the Melbourne Cup - we've done our job," said Leon Macdonald, who trains the filly in partnership with Andrew Gluyas.
"This is just sensational. As soon as she got to a mile-plus, she's shown her form. She's very sound, she hasn't had a problem."
Green Moon, who was caught wide throughout, struck the front as they sprinted for home, only to be caught by Southern Speed inside the final furlong as the filly scored by a comfortable length and a half, with Gai Waterhouse's Tullamore finished well forthird a further half-length back.
Stable jockey Clare Lindop lost the ride to Craig Williams at the owners' request. 'That's probably my saddest moment in the whole thing, that Clare wasn't on the horse," said Macdonald. "She spent a lot of time getting her ready."
