No preview of Ascot likely due to it not being on C4...... thats like them not previewing the national!!
We have learnt however that that Williams bookmaker prefers jumps but she doesn't get to watch much of it, poor mare.
Even the huge industry issue of the whip was skirted around with a brief 2 min discussion, but if you pop your form into the box next to the Arkle statue you could win the chance to stand next to the judge counting the amounts of strikes!!
Inclined to agree - ALREADY emailed them twice this morning... once to point out they were discretely neglecting to mention Hughes threw in his licence after collecting a SECOND ban... and then to invite Leslie to stfu and get a f move on. Surprisingly neither warranted a reply

Absolutely risible programme. Appalling stuff.Insult to anyone interested in racing. The one thing that really irks me is the made up tw@ts /emails messages 'from the public' that stream across the bottom of the screen. Dire dire dire. The credibility of this programme was highlighted by Lesley Graham reading out an email with a puerile joke about having a whip round for the banned jockeys. FFS !!!!

i should have spent more time in bed , but no up early shower shave suit on ready to leave for Ascot after watching The Morning Line. What a waste of an hour of TV to showcase a great if not the greatest day on the flat in years!!

Frankel 1/2 with Ladbrokes the most interesting part of the show..... and they haven't actually mentioned what a huge price is it.... where is Simon Holt/Richard Hoiles/Nick Luck/anyone interested in betting rather than just horses to highlight this??!!

Ramruma it would be a lot easier if they stopped talking about themselves and other crap and got on with the races. Francome just gave a charity bet in a race not mentioned and he said "great race the fillies race today". Top preview. We'll now spend time on the Guest Test. Q1 who did you play conkers with in the school playground when you were 10 ? Q2 what is your stable jockey's favourite colour ?

I remember when this was a must see programme, lately though it has morphed in to something I no longer recognise. Won't be long at this rate that C4 will have to move them to More4 permanently, or do away with it completely.

Bara have you been peeking at the questions ? Cheats never prosper. Aside, one minute preview of the Champion Stakes (yes the G1 Champion Stakes) then a 5 minute piece on a novice hurdler trained by Oliver Sherwood that might run some time this year at Exeter. American Football talk from Tanya - no wonder there is no time for quality race discussion.

Time to give Tanya the boot, week in week out she stumbles through her lines, does she not do any practice in the week? ..plus she seems more enthusiastic about the NFL than the racing...surely C4 must realise she just doesnt make the grade, if if Highflyer are somewhat conflicted!

1st time have watched it for 3 months usually out cycling but thought id go an hour later or so when its warmed up a bit. Would rather have frozen me bollax off riding a 20% gradient than putting up with that dire load of shyte.

55 min programme, 10 mins of adverts, so approx 45 mins of coverage....
20 mins Ascot (including talk to Chris Stickles regarding ground and sufficient Qipco series advertising)
10 mins Whip (major issue at the moment, could change the whole industry)
10 mins Cheltenham (including talk to Edward Gillespie regarding ground, not a very good card due to dry Autumn but on C4 so fair enough it needs a bit of coverage)
5 mins bits and bobs (plenty of time to talk to Evan, American football, Sam Thomas etc etc)
It surely is that simple!!

Even by their very low standards, that was the worst ever, it was pure filth, mind you it could go further downhill, they could have Bruce Millington as a presenter

And horse racing is forever wondering why it can't attract new customers. Andrew Franklin should have stepped down years ago, how much longer can this utter dross be tolerated?

Looks like they are all just going through the motions. NEEDS A TOTAL REVAMP AND TO GO BACK TO BASICS.
Do away with the guest test (that is only their to inflate the ego's of those partaking----- true racing fans dont give a ****)
Do away with the 10min phonecall, 2 mins will suffice.
Be the bigger man so to speak, and concentrate on the very best racing on the day whether that is on another channel or not, its the betting public that matter.
New presenters needed urgently. These lot look like they need euthanizing. Bring in some new and enthusiastic people, Tanya being a prime example of all thats wrong with the show.
Be controversial and discuss topics that matter, disagree with the bha if needed and make a stand..... these muppets have more of an opinion on how long to boil an egg.

denathorn - worryingly I find myself agreeing with you once again. Very harsh on Tanya though, she is a very good judge and well worth her place imo...

That was absolutely the worst Morning Line I've ever seen. Shocking from all concerned. They can't think they've done their best for British Racing there, although the way the show was framed it's a wonder BCD got any mention at all. Obviously having it at Cheltenham ruled out having Nick Luck, McGrath or anyone with anything interesting to say, as they'll all be at Ascot, so that was the biggest mistake.....but clearly the top of the production tree couldn't stomach doing a proper job on a meeting they're not covering. I'd imagine those in charge at the Levy Board are scratching their heads this morning and wondering why they're thumping six figures of industry money into that nonsense.
No disrespect to Cheltenham (although Ed G would surely admit he's not top billing today) but there was a massive opportunity to capitalise on the unwanted attention racing has had this week by doing a proper job on the whip furore and properly explain the issues (on both sides of the fence) to the GBP, after which a full preview of BCD should have taken up the majority of the rest of the programme. They blew it and it was nothing short of embarrassing.

this programme now sums up what is wrong with racing. its dumbed down for people who have no actual interest in horseracing and are only watching for something to do while eating their breakfast

I'm sure, when discussing the leading hurdlers going chasing, she might have remembered Peddlers Cross, which the three experts in the studio failed to do.
This is nothing to do with on screen staff anyway.

" It should be used in Guantanamo bay." so true. Or on that bit in the Clockwork Orange used to brainwash people into thinking racing is bad... not the other way around as it should be!

Excellent posts from denathorn and The Headmaster.
The ML in its present format cannot be allowed to continue. Its a facile show, trying to aim at both those interested in racing and those it wishes to encourage to racing. The problem is - and it should be staring them in the face - its missing both targets by a country mile.Question is - are they bothered? If not, then we the viewers, can expect to be fed warmed up/dumbed down trash, more suited to an obscure daytime magazine satellite channel.

The problem is that the programme consists almost entirely of what would be considered 'padding' on similar sports programmes. The guest test, competitions, Sam Thomas' 'dark horses', a chat with Freddie Williams' daughter, what the papers say, etc - all perfectly reasonable things to pad out a programme in a thin week or to fill in any gaps once the main event(s) has been analysed, but to use these things (as the ML does) as the basis of the programme is bonkers.
They don't even have to look very far to find a model or two on which to base the ML; the World Cup rugby on ITV, football on Sky Sports and the best of all imo, F1 motor racing on the BBC (and I hate F1 btw). These shows spend virtually the whole programmme focussed on the main event. They manage to appeal to a mass audience yet without patronising core followers of the sport. I don't understand why they find this model so difficult to adopt on the ML.

"Don't forget to tune in next week when our guest will be Felix Francis" ...sums it up....shocking, who at Highflyer thought he would be a good guest? People wanting to plug books go on chatshow's, not sports preview shows, certainly not as the main guest at least.

.....according to Channel 4's racing consultant, Andrew Thompson.....
"It's vital that we don't do anything that upsets that core audience, those people who've watched it, week in, week out, for years," Thompson says. "We value those viewers more than anyone and they're very knowledgeable.

We all know it's tired, lazy and full of nepotism.
But to have a big day like this, and think to yourself, 'I know, let's bring in Alice Plunkett' is beyond all reasoning, imo...

yep - knowledgeable enough to switch off in their droves imo. Be interesting to see what the viewing statistics have become over a period of years - todate

The rot set in when they extended it from a half hour to fifty minutes a few years back
They seemed to be struggling to fill in the extra time from the outset
However its got progessively worse and since the revamp its become car crash TV
I imagine they would be struggling to get 10,000 viewers particularly with the rugby on the other channel

Have to say BBC coverage today was brilliant. Totally trounced C4 as they focused on the races today. Much better from them. Hope C4 and the morning line take note.
