The BHA have made two mistakes imo. Firstly, they should have banned the use of the whip altogether (save for 'correction' like they do in hands n'heels races). And second, they should have introduced the no-whip rule at Ascot tomorrow. The way jockeys would have ridden at Ascot (without whips) - pushing, shoving, kidding, cajoling - would have become the template for the way they would ride in all races, not just those where there's prestige and big prize money at stake.

This counting thing is stupid. There will be no logic to the number.

The mistake they have made is to pander to people who know nothing about the game

if people are so concerned about the use of the whip, why are attendances at an all time high.

Not a veggie, on the wind up or new to the game. I really do mean what I said above; had a no-whip rule been introduced at Ascot you'd have seen how jockeys could and should ride in all races.

TRD Racing,

I accept what you are saying about attendances but is this not particularly with the summer time fridaynight/ groups after racing brigade who would normally deter the usual racegoers away.I cannot believe that the  midweek summer and winter regulars are at an all time high.

The British have been pandering to all save the whale groups for years now..........horse racing gets it now.........lets hope it doesn't go down the the route of your greyhound racing.

Why do the pro-whip brigade talk as if racing should operate in its only little world and not be subject to scrutiny from 'outsiders'. All the same 'hands-off' arguments were put forward during the fox hunting debate and I suspect the very same people who lost out there are now supporting the jockeys over the whip issue. Hardly a surprise though.

The "outsiders" you refer to object and oppose alot of things they have no interest in for the sake of it............the whip rule, dale farm and probably up a tree near a motorway next week.........where will it end, when their opinion is the right one..

Lots of "country" people were against fox hunting, but you'd do well to find one who has been around animals all their life who thinks a modern whip used correctly would hurt a horse.
