Good Riddens.

I support him all the way. Hope his fellow jocks do. A strike at Ascot on Sat might just make them sit up.

Dear Richard

If you can promise me that you have tried on every horse you ride as it seems from your latest statement that you have the punters plight at the heart of your protest I will back you whole heartedly

Monsieur Chevalier at Windsor springs to mind as you seem to have coped with LESS than 5 slaps that night and the punters who bet the horse were all "delighted", feel free to mention any more

Quit crying you well paid "Passenger" and get on with it , you have all had ages to complain yet you wait for the implimentation of a stupid rule before you cry and worst of all you use the punters as a means to put your complaint forward

Do one

good luck Hughsie, must be the best jock riding in the UK and Ireland at present
Hang in there and put some proposals to the BHA to change the rules

Report Brother Mouzone • October 13, 2011 11:02 PM BST
I couldn't give a feck it was little Fergal who brought up the punters plight as long as one of them did, at least Hughesie stuck his head up and uttered the dreaded P word.
Report wildmanfromborneo • October 13, 2011 11:03 PM BST
Rocketfingers you can tell him that this forum which is normally so severe on jockeys seem overwhelmingly on his side, you can also tell him that the Irish forum is nearly 100% on his side.

Being serious, Best of luck Richard :)

This is the epitomy of a worrying state for the sport. A top jockey missing one of the worlds premier meets over 2 tinpot races with 5hitty prize money.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby • October 13, 2011 11:05 PM BST
You're a fine jockey. Think he should have slept on it before handing in licence
Report brigust1 • October 13, 2011 11:07 PM BST
Yeah, go get 'em Hughsie. These rules are stupid and the vote on the Racing Post website was 72% against. How can this shower have got this so wrong?

And Rob Street had the brass neck to say this whip issue wasn't affecting the Champion's Day promotions. Another clueless 'leader'. Where do these merchants come from ffs?
Report kefir_man • October 13, 2011 11:08 PM BST
Admire your stand...let's hope the rest are behind you and we can get this silly rule revoked. Good luck Richard Hughes
Report Steamship • October 13, 2011 11:08 PM BST
I dont like myself for feling this but I hope on Saturday night a statement is issued by the jockeys that none of them will be riding until further notice.
Report taipan501 • October 13, 2011 11:11 PM BST
then who the fook did they consult when making up these stupid fooking rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Report GEORGE.B • October 13, 2011 11:12 PM BST
Richard, just put it to the likes of McCririck that if they want the whip banned then they to have to start questioning the whole sport.

Put it to McCririck that if he wants the whip banned then presumably he wants Jump racing banned too. After all, not many horses have died from being hit with an air-cushioned whip - but how many have died trying to jump an obstacle? So which is the more 'cruel'?

We have to defend the sport we love or else it's the thin edge of the wedge. It is scientifically proven that there are no welfare issues using an air-cushioned whip, so long as it is used correctly and within reason.
Report steviebees • October 13, 2011 11:16 PM BST
Isn't it a little ironic that it is Richard who has been hit with this severe ban? I don't think anyone who follows racing would consider him a 'butcher' in the saddle. Indeed quite a few, on occasions, would feel he was maybe a tad too sympathetic in his style.
Report R Carver • October 13, 2011 11:20 PM BST
I remember Richard Guest handing in his licence many yrs ago after an brush with the authorities. No question the rules are ill-conceived, knee-jerk and this kind of madness was predictable; they have contrived to ruin the best racing for months on Saturday (I mean the return of Cheltenham, and some terrific stuff form Ascot).
Report whodareswins • October 13, 2011 11:23 PM BST
Those who believe they are being made subject to unfair laws or rules should heed the words attributed to the Irish philosopher Edmund Burke. - All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

Report Daryl Revok • October 13, 2011 11:37 PM BST
Richard, you're not bigger than the sport itself, and a week isn't enough time to give these rules a fair chance. Nobody believes, for one minute, that you'd have given up your licence tonight if you had a raft of favourites to ride on Saturday, and you can't claim to speak for punters if you're only, in your own words, going to whip something with a chance of winning, rather than something that might get placed (Available for example).

I flounced out of playschool, years ago, because I wasn't allowed to have the tractor in the sandpit every week. I was never allowed the tractor again. Think on.
Report brigust1 • October 13, 2011 11:42 PM BST
Will someone please give Daryl his tractor. He can flounce back to playschool then.
Report paradox and equilibrium • October 13, 2011 11:43 PM BST

Report pedrobob • October 13, 2011 11:44 PM BST
Daryl, I think I get your point. But just to clarify, are you saying you still haven't grown up enough to be allowed a tractor?
Report Dan Chipowski • October 13, 2011 11:55 PM BST
Ask him to explain his ride on Avon River two outings ago at Windsor.

Couldn't ban him for long enough, imo. Cool
Report windmill • October 13, 2011 11:57 PM BST
hughes,s stance on this must be fully supported, if not another nail in the coffin for the sport we love, lets hope some of your comrade,s join in a.s.a.p.
Report elvissss • October 14, 2011 12:21 AM BST
It doesn't matter who the jock was to an extent that handed in his licence - but it most certainly helps the case for the jury that it was a high profile jock. WD Richard Hughes. It's no good nit picking one bad ride here or there, that he has done well out of the sport - the whole point is the new rules are a farce and have to be reversed. FFS - In the week thats in it the BRAINS of the sport decide to implement such rubbish. And then we've that hairy MORON on sky spouting his usual shoite - Between him and the BHA GOMBEENS .... ffs CLOWNS

the rules are too rigid and impossible to carry out ptoperly in the long run during the heat of the moment!

tell him i'm down after backing Available for a place last night, and he never tried an inch, compared to his ride on More Than Words....I have to get on with it, and I suggest he does as well. He never rode for the betting public.
Report Studious_1 • October 14, 2011 12:45 AM BST
I like RH Roger and I've defended his actions tonight on another thread but you're totally right to be effed off with the ride he gave Available yesterday, he should have got 2nd easily but didn't look like he wanted it and it was a pretty disgraceful effort if I'm being frank.

With the Butler horse being the 'off' horse for the race I fear nothing else in that contest was unfortunately - as you have alluded to, it's part and parcel and we have to get on with it as punters but on this issue I think we have to side with him and the other jocks 'for the greater good' and put aside the fact the shafting we get from them unfortunately all too regularly.

The rules are farcical in their present form - the BHA have gone too far too quickly at the wrong time of the year.  The penalties are too harsh, the limitations too limited and the whole thing is the embodiment of the rancid mess that is British Racing in the tenth year of the new century.

Jockeys have been and always will be 'at it' - in a sport governed without a strong spine (unlike HK for instance) that will never change - however to have them in a position accepting defeat when they are actually bloody trying (occasionally they do!) due to these sanctions is ridiculous and it makes a mockery of the sport.

Spot on studious.

From start to finish.
Report Roger De Bris • October 14, 2011 1:03 AM BST
RH can't have it both ways, beat the daylights out of the ones gambled on, and ride hands and heels only on the ones that drift i.e Available. Plus the Tudor Prince ride he hit once full-on and one slap down the neck, while the 1st & 2nd were given the full 7 ssmacks. He's let MANY punters down over the years as well giving plenty of horses an easy finish and dropping out of the places a la Tudor Prince.
He has also stated he doesnt ride for the betting public in interviews, so his statements tonight are a joke. Why should we feel sorry for him?
Report ilikewavingatbuses • October 14, 2011 1:08 AM BST
yes but i support him in his protest!! the not placing or finishing the best poss position is another debate imo were a lot of jocks are guilty of, all of them at some stage!!

the whip rules are not viable and u will see far more horses not placing soon!
