WILLIAM HILL are calling on racing to put its house in order following the drama at Wetherby on Wednesday, when nine jockeys, including BBC Sports Personality of the Year Tony McCoy, were banned for failing to respond to a yellow flag.

Kate Miller, William Hill's head of racing media, said: "This sort of occurrence seems to be happening too regularly now, and perhaps a different system (for stopping
"Someamelioration Shocked needs to take place to identify what is the best way to inform riders when there is a void race, clearly one man waving a flag isn't working. Jockeys are losing income, and with bookmakers and punters also losing money through incidents likethis, something has got to be done about it."

As a goodwill gesture, Hills, Ladbrokes, Coral, **** and Paddy Power all announced that they would pay out on the first three horses home - Cunning Clarets, King's Council and Red Skipper - and refunded all losing bets, while Victor Chandler said it would pay out on Cunning Clarets and declaring all other bets void. Ladbrokes is also paying out on all multiple bets.

Betfair, which sponsored the race, has refunded all bets, but is donating its prize-money contribution to Spinal Research to ensure the charity doesn't suffer financially from the event being voided
