The British Horseracing Authority rule that forbids jockeys from entering into commercial agreements with betting organisations is set to be lifted in November.

Trainers are already allowed to write tipping blogs, the most obvious example being champion National Hunt trainer Paul Nicholls, who previews his weekend runners for Betfair during the winter.
However, it was perceived as unfair by the jockeys that they were not able to do the same.

The matter came to a head this summer when Ryan Moore was prevented from entering into a similar deal with Betfair.

His weekly blog was pulled shortly before he was due to start even though “the column” had already been advertised. Following that episode the BHA and the Professional Jockeys Association entered into negotiation to find a solution.

BHA’s head of security Paul Scotney said: “It will give jockeys more freedom in this area.
"Provided there are checks and balances and it is within a strict framework there is no reason why they can’t do interviews for a bookmaker, in-house TV or blogs.”

Top jockeys already write tipping columns for newspapers and often assess their chances on racing television channels, but this relaxation of the rules opens up the possibility of another lucrative income stream, which could, in some cases, be worth tens of thousands of pounds a year.
