I know there has been in running bet on betfair since the year dot but how long ago was it that the amount of money that gets traded rose greatly. I do understand that there are a group of punters who bet from the track and we also have people with varying speed of pics. I'm just looking into some stuff and wonder from what date the market has been in its current state?

A lot of people seem interested in the subject but nobody seem to know the answer!

You ask ... "how long ago was it that the amount of money that gets traded ROSE GREATLY."
------------------------------------------

I think you will find that, surely, such a question became somewhat obsolete quite some time ago.

The general consensus appears to be that - ever since additionally delayed pictures by ATR, and the emergence of more sophisticated track players - along with box accommodation on course  ...
Then 'in-running' amounts have DECLINED markedly.
Report _Scotboyass_ • October 10, 2011 8:12 PM BST
Onlooker is absolutely correct.
Report fatboy • October 10, 2011 11:14 PM BST
Ok Onlooker apologises for my poor framed question So when did this decline start to happen? and is it continuing to decline?
Report onlooker • October 10, 2011 11:22 PM BST
Others - who concentrate solely on 'in-running' - will be more precise than me.

Ordinary 'home based' players have been whittled away, through ...

It probably started with the Exchange shops activity, say 3 years ago.
The Atr pictures have slowed, progressively, over about the past two - at the same time that the track player explosion has happened.

Then 'the dog eat dog' players from the 'fast pictures'/track players brigade have been hit with a double dose of the Premium Charge.

A broad picture - others will have more finite, or even mathematical evidence.

Thanks i have returned to betfair full time and was aware of all these things happening just wanted to get the general feeling.
It sounds to me if you think that it will continue to decline because the market is so skewed and the fresh "meat" is quickly discouraged.

In One.

The in running betting and trading liquidity here on betfair is fine. Take no notice at all of the doom and gloom merchants. As an in running player I monitor the liquidity periodically and I can tell you that it is steady as a rock. Even the poor low class midweek races reach an average total of £140k matched in running. Betfair is the only exchange where trading decent amounts of money across the field in running is possible.

I'd say it was from about this time last year that the effect of the Box 11 boys (on-course 'supposedly-illegal' private box dwellers) has been felt....progressively harder playing at home since then. Was first week in July, i think, that ATR slowed their pics still further, making that channel unplayable for most at-home InRunners.
Report duncan idaho • October 11, 2011 9:29 AM BST
^ above is my experience of IR as a home player and not a comment on general liquidity...i'm sure the large amounts traded IR have always come from fast-pic players.
Report Jinxy1 • October 11, 2011 9:29 AM BST
duncan, why does everyone think that in running revolves purely around those that had fast pics? Its nonsense to think that at all. The effect of the ATR delay etc etc has had minimal effect on the in running liquidity.
Report duncan idaho • October 11, 2011 9:34 AM BST
I dont disagree that 'The effect of the ATR delay etc etc has had minimal effect on the in running liquidity' because the ATR delay doesnt affect the big-money players (fast piccers)at all. If people are 6 secs behind the fast piccers and still betting 4 figs IR, then i'm wrong and i take my hat off to them.

All they do is hire the conference suite boxes for £500 per day wiith the pc access links.
Report duncan idaho • October 11, 2011 9:46 AM BST
Do you play on slow pics, jinxy?
Report DeKaiser • October 11, 2011 9:47 AM BST
There ia still a 10-12 strong fast pics gang in the midlands.
Report Jinxy1 • October 11, 2011 9:51 AM BST
I don't use any pics at all duncan.
Report duncan idaho • October 11, 2011 9:59 AM BST
Cheers, jinxy.
Report zebadei • October 11, 2011 10:06 AM BST
Its clear - if you regularly bet in running using atr pics then eventually your details are going to be fowarded to gamecare and hopefully they'll help sort you out.
Report fatboy • October 11, 2011 10:50 AM BST
Jinxy am i right assume you are a layer and in that you are still getting your bets on, but have you seen a reduction in your profits because i would of thought that the on course people only back a 1.5 choice when it is 1.6 and hence you get less stuff matched?
Report Jinxy1 • October 11, 2011 11:26 AM BST
Hi fatboy, yes I lay in running and profits are still good, I havent noticed a downturn at all other than one day when I put a selection up on my blog with a recommended lay off price and someone went and put £3.8k in front of the price I was looking for, wasnt amused but never mind.
Report fatboy • October 11, 2011 2:01 PM BST
When you say profits are "still Good" sorry i don't mean to pry are you getting the same % returns? Also do you only lay 1 horse in each race?
Report Jinxy1 • October 11, 2011 2:10 PM BST
I back them first pre race and then lay off in running, mostly just one in a race but now and again there will be two. ROI is steady away, I try to make a set percentage each race which is variable.
Report Feck N. Eejit • October 11, 2011 2:17 PM BST
Have you ever separated your pre-race & ir P/L jinxy?
Report Jinxy1 • October 11, 2011 2:23 PM BST
I haven't no. Its not often that one that I trade on actually trades before the off, it does happen but not often. As long as I get matched in running for the lay off price then I'm very happy to be all green, and to be honest I haven't noticed any difference in the liquidity in the in running markets at all.
Report rocky ttotal • October 11, 2011 3:40 PM BST
are the IR markets suspending in real time.
Report Jinxy1 • October 12, 2011 1:24 PM BST
I think they suspend at just about the exact second the winner crosses the line.
Report rocky ttotal • October 12, 2011 1:28 PM BST
jinxy if they are doing that then the delay isn't as big as 6-8 seconds, but my cynical mind tells me they aren't.
Report duncan idaho • October 12, 2011 1:55 PM BST
Suspend on ATR comes up roughly at 1/2f marker (when there is one) on my pics...which is roughly 6 secs
Report rocky ttotal • October 12, 2011 2:11 PM BST
thanks for that duncan,do you know what the delay is on ruk? thanks in advance.
Report duncan idaho • October 12, 2011 2:27 PM BST
not really rocky....there are others on here that follow these things more closely than me
Report rocky ttotal • October 12, 2011 2:30 PM BST
thanks anyway
