Well said Darren - racing needs to get rid of him or issue an edict that he is not allowed to call it within a minute of crossing the line.

The bloke (dave Smith) is a complete idiot. It's nothing to do with technology why he calls the photo's so quick. It's simply his ego. Instead of Nick Luck massaging Smith's ego he should be questionning why he is risking getting it wrong by calling the photo so quickly when virtually no other judge does. The winning distances were a short head and a head yet he called a photo for 2nd. If the technology was so good he'd be calling 2nd and 3rd at least as quick as the winner with the distance between them bigger.
It should also be remembered that Smith was the judge at Fakenham a few years back who had already climbed down from the judges box before the only horse to go the right way had finished the race resulting in the race having to be called void. It was the day after the cheltenham festival and of a massive jackpot carryover. It cost some people thousands of pounds yet Smith was allowed to carry on as normal with no censure. It won't be long before he messes up again.

D.S. has a p.c. machine connected to the photo finish in his box and as soon as the horse pass the post a snap shot appears on his machine and he has a line that he puts on the horses noses and that all takes about 3 secs.

so therefore it's a photo finish, yet he think it's clever to not officially call a photo.

He's not called the judge for nothing..It's at the judges discretion (or however you spell it)

Anaglogs, in that case why is he more or less the only one who does it for very close finishes (why take the risk) and also in that case why did he call a photo for 2nd when the distance between 2nd and 3rd was greater than between 1st and 2nd. It's all about his ego.

He's just  VERY GOOD judge. With plenty of bottle.

it is still possible to make a mistake and the quicker the decision is made, the more likely a mistake. its needless arrogance.

Couldn't disagree more. Egotistical moron who is extremely lucky to still be in a job.

I doubt very much if 'bottle' is a necessary for a judge imo.

Surely by calling the result early he is saving a lot of people losing their dosh on incorrectly calling the photo themselves?

Only true when he gets it right LL. AD, if it was about p1ssing on their chips why doesn't he call a photo, give out the wrong result and then correct it.
