one is the maximum amount of bait you could lose, the other is the size of fish you could catch.

I will put you out of your misery.

Understand what you are asking RE: SINGLE Bets. - However ...

The Tool/Option is very useful when you are Laying MORE than one horse in a market -
and you want your PAYOUT to be the SAME - whichever horse wins.

Saves you having to work out the different Stakes/Liabities for each horse due to the various differing odds.

cheers onlooker .

When i've been laying certain types of horses i've just done it to liabilty - whether it be 1,2 or even more in a race ---

Having had a look at the PAYOUT option i'm not too sure whether laying to liability is correct . Any advice ?

cheers

One of the basic principles at Betfair is that a customer is only allowed to risk funds that are available in their account.

Liability (sometimes also referred as Exposure) is a term which represents the amount of money used to cover a bet. This liability is taken from your available to bet balance which ensures you have enough money to cover your worst case scenario.

Example:
If you place a lay bet for £10 stake at odds of 11.0 your liability will be £100

I fully  understand the meaning of liability and payout.

I am just not sure which one i should be using ?

Say for eg i'm laying 2 horses in the same race - would i be better using liability or payout ?

That depends on you assertion as to the horses chances.

Say 3 horses ... @ 3.0 (2/1) - 4.5 (7/2) - and 6.6 (touch above 11/2) - for simplicity.

If you want to PAYOUT £100 - whichever wins = Use Payout, by inserting 100 in the PAYOUT Box/Option.

It will then calculate YOUR Liability, and the BACKER's stakes automatically.

3.0 = Your Liability £66.66 - Backer's stake £33.33 (in round figures) - PAYOUT 100 (£99.99)
4.5 = 77.77 - 22.22 - PAYOUT 100 (99.99)
6.6 = 84.84 - 15.15 - PAYOUT 100 (99.99)

- less commission.

However - You may wish to LAY them ALL to win, say, £50, from each - then your LIABILITY will, obviously, SOAR the bigger each price is.

Beware, that Laying more than one horse in the PLACE market, to PAYOUT £100, as above   - could, of course,  result in your PAYOUT being THREE times £100 - in a conventional Place market.

cheers onlooker , i'm probably not explaining myself correctly .

I only lay WIN  , and have been laying to lose 5% of bank , roughly £100 .

If more than one selection in any race  , obviously the liability becomes less ,

Would i be better laying liability or payout iyo , whether it one or multiple lays per race .

Or doesnt it matter ???

cheers

Payout is a make-believe scenario that imagines you are a bookie putting notes in your
satchel. Take 100-10 you add a tenner to your satchel (field money) but you'll be out £110
if it wins. For BF purposes it is useless in my humble opinion.

More useful would be a Bet d a q type tool where you could lay everything to take (say) £100.

this is key imo

Hi Swifty. Do you mean the Bet d a q type tool? They've had it years, I think. I'm surprised
it's not on this site.

Hi Pete the Bloke

I meant the OP's question. Beat The Overround has expounded at length on the subject of laying at Betfair SP to a fixed liability.

It's a bumpy ride but there is an edge.
