Deauville is very chic. On almost street corner there's a Prada or Hermes shop. Many wealthy Parisiens have summer houses in Deauville.

In the town centre itself, Hotel prices can be expensive--mainly because there's not much choice with it being such a small town. I stayed in Pont L'Eveque, about 3/4 miles outside Deauville

http://www.mercure.com/gb/hotel-5450-mercure-deauville-pont-l-eveque/index.shtml

I hired a car and drove there from Paris. There was free parking in the hotel grounds. The rooms were spacious compared to Paris. The town of Pont L'Eveque is also very pretty but without the Gucci shops. Across the estuary is Trouville, Deauville's sister town. Prices there are 20-30% cheaper.

The advantage of staying in Deauville itself is you can walk to the racetrack from your hotel.

If you don't want to drive there is a train service from Paris, which drops you right in the centre of town.

The racecourse itself is somewhat rundown, and reminds me a little of Newmarket's July course. Prix Jacques le Marois day is the busiest of the August racing season. No dress code is required.

The racecourse at Cagnes-sur-mer is also very picturesque--if picturesque is what you're looking for. The racecourse iself is located less than 1 kilometre from the beach, and as a dramatic backdrop, has the jagged volcanic Esterel mountains, where tourists go on hiking expeditions. That said, the town itself of Cagnes is not particularly noteworthy.

It's big advantage is it's only 10-15 minutes drive from Nice airport. Or if you are staying in Nice itself, it would be a 30 minute drive.

Be aware that the racing is not of the quality as you will see at the Paris tracks or Deauville for that matter. During the summer months, all flat meetings start in the evenings--mainly because the heat can be intense during the summer. The racing year starts off in December, with a varied programme of flat, jumps, and French trotting races.
