Mine's go to Harbinger on the flat and Grand Cruz and Master Minded over jumps

His rating was based round one victory in The King George and Queen Elizabeth stakes but what exactly did he beat that day?

Ryan Moore, who is no mean judge chose to ride Workforce and obviously thought he was the better horse but something went terribly wrong and he ran no sort of race.

That left Harbinger with Cape Blanco to beat.

Cape Blanco had scraped home over 12 furlong in the Irish Derby beaten Midas Touch who has lost 7 times since. Like most Irish Derby's the form is near worthless.

He is clearly  a 10 furlong horse who struggles at the trip as we saw the other day when tried again at 12 furlong he scraped home by a nose at long odds on. It appears that with 12 fulongs not being an option and So You Think dominating the best 10 furlong races they decided to call it a day.

Looking back at the King George Cape Blanco stopped like shot and the 3rd Youmzain would get beaten in a Brighton seller one day and run the race of his life the next is about the worst yardstick you could ever use.

In my book that race feel to pieces that day and what we saw was avery good horse beating absolutely nothing.

Grand Cruz won prior to the Cheltenham festival. He looked like a worldbeater to the naked eye

What got me was what he beat! Knockara Beau, a horse who's best runs have come at the toughest of the toughest Carlisle in bog heavy ground plus he only gave him 4lbs

The next thing we know he's rated 2 to3 lbs within Big Bucks and Big Bucks goes from 1/3-1/4 out to evens like the whole racing world has gone mad.

On the Big Day he runs a good race but it becomes clear to all Big Bucks could have given him a stone, had agood laugh and still beat him as he liked.

Perhaps the daddy of them all came under the guidance of the BHA.

No one can deny Master Minded put up a brilliant performance in the QMCC it was Arkle like the way he bounded up the hill but! and there is always a but, The BHA give him a rating superior to both Kauto Star and Denman who have won absolutely everything there is to win time after time proving they are worth every point of their ratings.

After only one race? where do these people come from?

Master Minded's rating is pretty simple to explain it came from a cross over in ratings.

Voy Por Ustudes was himself a QMCC winner. The winner of the worst QMCC in the races history and was probaly overrated by the BHA which lked to this lunacy.

I'm not knocking any of these 3 horses they are all top class it's the rating system that gets me.

It seems to me time after time those who do rating dig huge holes for themselves by overrating once horse and then when that one gets stuffed the entire sytem falls apart and we get crazy ratings and the next thing you know horses like Harbinger become as good as the likes of Mill Reef, Dancing Brave etc were. Which of course is complete and utter nonsense.

I don't know what the answer would be perhaps stick a zero on the end of ratings and widen the playing field?

Harbinger was a late developing machine, how anyone can knock the form is beyound me? must be one of the better older horses of all time,he crucified workforce (who won the arc). Yes hindsight is a great thing but it is just a reflection or theory of no meaning.Harbinger was happennig at that point in time you cannot compare with previous generations he was awesome.

That said i understand what you mean about ratings at times looking on the high side, but how should you rate a arc with several european derby winners of different generations? It is all about opinions!

Seeing as I know nothing about the flat I won't comment on that one and Grand Crus agreed was ridiculous, I backed it e/w prior to the Knockara Beau race and after that knew he could not touch Big Bucks. Laid off short in the World. Now Master Minded I don't think you can knock because it is the performance that deserved the rating maybe not the horse as he's never repeated it but you cannot argue with the performance, time or anything about it. On that day in those conditions he was the best horse I've ever seen. Carvills in the Welsh National is probably the only comparable in my betting career. Kauto's win that everyone raves about in the KG whilst visibly impressive had too many holes in it. I could go into it for ages but just watch the race over and over and you'll note how so many of the opposition just had nightmares.

Ribot, Royal Palace, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dahlia, Grundy, Troy, Shergar, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Generous, Lammtarra, Montjeu, Hurriance Run..........

Amazing to think that of all those outstanding winners of the King George, only Grundy got within 10 lengths of Harbinger on the clock.

And the likes of Petoski, Teenoso, King's Theatre, Galileo, Azamour, Duke Of Marmalade and Conduit would have been beaten by 5 lengths +......

Rondetto,I have sympathy with your viewpoint but the handicapper had no option but to rate it so highly.
If the horse had never been seen before no one would argue with the rating, take Harbinger out and the result looks ok except for Workforce. The time was very good and from the betting in the previous week it seemed that something special was expected of him.You know the rating is too high,I know it is too high but the book says it is ok.Happy
Master Minded I am not sure about the rating but he was very ,very good that day.
