I have read some heated debates on here recently about:

Over Rounds
Bookies X's
Costs of Pitches
Not being able to lay all the horses in a market
Claiming to be the same price as here

I am confused if all of these things are so bad why don't these bookies

Avoid the cost of pitches and stay home in the warm and lay on here.

IF your over rounds are the same as on here and your prices are the same on here then you have nowt to lose.

At home you will have no X's , you will be laying in a market where there is money on the lay side of EVERY horse in EVERY race and as you claim you bet at the same prices, you comm charge will surely be more than covered by not having to buy the pitch / pay staff / and other X's saved.

Simply Put

No X's that you moan about

Ability to lay EVERY horse that you moan you can't

No travel that you moan about

No bad weather that you moan about

I am sure that I have totally missed the point here and the synic in me thinks you go because you would rather take on the bookie fodder and part time punter that frequent racecourses day in day out in you 120% market than none of them understand rather than take on a core of educated punters who have half a chance of recognising value and an open honest market.

I would like to have an open honest answer to this , pref without SHOUTING .

PS

I will look back later for the results rather than get into it like stewart did tuther day, as it seem all bookmakers presume everyone who does not buy a pitch is a fool.

most people like to know they are on rather than finding out later there bets were not placed, also most people dont like there debit cards been messed around with, without been informed, whilst i am never on here on a saturday afternoon but i believe most saturdays the site crashes leaving people stuck in positions they didnt want to be in,and off course if you are succesfull you pay for it in commision.

how does a bookie's clerk learn his trade these days

as presumably it involves computer knowhow and trading knowhow

most 8 year olds have enough skill, take about 2 races, in fact I sure some firms are using them

Jimnast, when I say he would find it boring, it would be because he no longer could use his mental skills.

its much easier now sparrow because its all in front of you by pressing buttons, theres no adding up your field book or which horse takes what out,and off course the need to no what percentages where in your head as gone, many really would not have a clue what 2 x 6/4 shots and a 4 shot added up to,as for the place markets nobody had a clue really what was no good until the journey home when you balanced up,thats all done for you now,but you still have to try and end up with a book that suits you,off course that is not always possible.

I go racing regularly in Ireland and i love a bet and the pleasure of winning is in collecting in cash and thats why betting on the racecourse is nicer than betting with the exchanges.

jimnast, I can remember watching my father at White City dogs in the 50s, he worked for Johnny White, father of the present bookmaker. A minute or so before off time he would rattle off the liabilities in no time at all. Only 6 runners but a lot of bets taken in those days.

LOL

Plenty of replies and NO answers just another on course LOVE IN

I for one would hate an on course tote monopoly it would kill racing and I have plenty of friends that bet on course.

My point here was all the moaning about how bad your lot is and why if it IS so bad you don't just do as suggested if it is so bad.

Never mind , it was simple enough but I guess my thoughts about you would rather bet against he on course mugs is exactly the truth, so might I suggest the crying about how expensive it is / how hard it is to lay a full book / how many favs win / etc etc.

Good luck to all the on course bods, just spare us the bleeding heart shoit , it is pointless.

Cue the "Plenty of pitches available" replies Laugh

You miss a couple of vital points zippie,no course bookie in their right mind would lay a book with some of the prices for outsiders on here, plus 60% pc.

Add to that couple,crap liquidity.

the MASSIVE wrags on here would take out such a small % that a book based around the others is still possible and lest we forget there is no place terms that married to the massive win price

HELLO ZIPPIE

the things you mention i never moan about, other than the weather,i do however moan about the gambling commision, the publicity to tote get before every meeting and the way some racecourses treat us.

so i surpose you can add those to your list[;)]

you can bleet on as much as you like zippee but if i may let me correct you on your opening post.
course books DO offer the same price as the exchange on the short prices..not all runners
but we offer the same price as the "to back" price and not the lay price.
so we don't have any advantage by laying on course or at home and if we did we would have to pay tax and betting levy on any profit unlike the unlicenced layers on here
not intended as a moan just putting facts straight

zippie,we all like a bit of banter but i don't think many of us are really moaning and if any layer on here can make it pay with no inside information then good luck to them,as pointed out by others i don't really like what the exchanges have done to the ring which allow people with very little knowledge and often absolute no interest in the sport to accept bets (it can't be long before someone trains a monkey to do it if it works out a few quid cheaper) but unfortunately it won't change. but as someone who since leaving school has tried to spend as much time as possible on a racecourse i sometimes have to pinch myself at the job i have got and would much rather go to work than have a day off, need i say more?
