just glad to see his name on a thread showing him up....he's got away with it pretty much immediately after the race on here....he's a smug get.....you can almost see him pat himself on the back when he hits one of his witty puns

The whole thing was embarrassing, from Machin's inaccurate commentary to Steedman and Willoughby still talking about Rio's Girl in their summary for two minutes after most viewers had realised it was Straboe, awful.

Don't blame Stew Machin. He is human and made a mistake by mixing up Rio's Girl and Straboe.Bear in mind he is concentrating on the whole field and the sun was in his eyes.Indeed, blame the punter himself who lost thousands on the say so of somebody else. There are too many idiots on this forum.

Couldn't agree more, jammy. How was Machin meant to tell the difference between a big strapping gelding and a little filly who has a darker coat colour?

Jamilla is spot on - especially in blaming the punter. Indeed I would go as far as to say the punter deserves to lose their money in relying on the commentator rather than their own eyes. Clearly the punter could not differentiate between Rio's Girl and Straboe.
George B - Both horses had very similar colours and both had identical looking headgear. Stewart was calling the final furlong through bins in the final furlong and from the side angle and the commentary position both horses were covered by other runners. But then again it is so easy to criticise from the comfort of your armchair.
In thirteen years of calling this is the first time Stewart has called a wrong winner, not a bad record at all. Then again looking at most of the postings that appear on this forum most will not allow the facts to get in the way of their know all bigotry.
As regards an apology I think you will find there should be an unreserved one in tomorrows Racing Post. Of course most here will not be interested in the facts but your are going to get them anyway - after the race Stewart was genuinely upset by the mistake he made. But then again many of you don't want to hear or accept that because you think you are so bloody perfect.

A couple of 'interesting' posters have appeared to defend Machin. 'Jammy' with just the 30-odd posts in recent times and The Beast with his first post in nearly 4 years.
Fwiw, I'm not blaming Machin for anything and he has nothing to apologise for as far as I'm concerned. As you say we all make mistakes. I wasn't the one backing Rio's Girl at 1.01, and even if it I had, probably like most on here, I'd accept it was my own fault.
In fact I'm sure those on the ball and not influenced by what the commentator says will be thinking it's a pity this sort of mistake doesn't occur more often given the amounts of money which can be won.
As for the similarities in colours and blinkers, I'm sure Machin was aware this could pose a problem. They are 2 totally different specimens in terms of size and skin colour. It would be interesting to know how Machin had decided to differentiate between them pre-race. But as you say, if the sun was in his eyes, it wouldn't have been easy for him.

George, the very idea that a commentator would take into account the physical appearance of two random runners in a big-field handicap sprint is beyond a joke. Just gtfo, seriously.
Anyone who backed the wrong horse because of the commentary? Tough meh. It's YOUR fault. That is all.

Chompy, when the jockeys were crouched in the saddle, not so easy to differentiate (at least from the TV pictures).
Easier to see that one's a big tan cloured horse and the other a little black filly.
Or do you think all horses look the same?
HTH.

i would have thought the fact that we get few mistakes of this nature is because it's bloody relatively simple for a professional commentator to get it right.....if it was hard to differentiate from one and another when they are crouching behind the saddle, it would bloody well happen every other race ffs.

there are plenty of pundits, link men, commentators who receive critism on here but i can't recall a single thread on machin in all my time here
the bloke does a good job, he's made a mistake and if anyone on here can claim to be perfect then you're a better man than me
he isn't there to steal the show, he's solid, he clearly loves his sport, frankly i don't see how people can get so @rsy about what is as much their mistake as his
there were comments the other days from certain people who i won't name when a similar mistake happened (ascot) to the effect of well done you just made us a fortune; i guess it just depends which side of the book you're sitting on
give the bloke some slack and move on

I once had 10,000 posters printed with the wrong date on them.
If anyone here has never made a mistake, feel free to get stuck in, imo...
As for the media freeloader on this thread who thinks the forum is 'a joke', well, I can understand why the racing media don't like it - the truth gets told here, and clearly that has become anathema in a profession which now exists only to exploit and deceive the people you are supposed to represent...
