Yes - several before they changed the rules.
Report raspberrybottom • October 1, 2011 7:38 PM BST
Was one called Spindrifter? Soba? Northern trained, I think.
Report FOYLESWAR • October 1, 2011 7:40 PM BST
yeah think  it happened a few times in the 60-70s
Report onlooker • October 1, 2011 7:40 PM BST
NO - neither of them.

They were multiple winners.
Report salmon spray • October 1, 2011 7:40 PM BST
Doubt it being either of those. Like onlooker i can remember it happening a few times but I think it was horses who had no pretensions to being that good.
Report black shuck • October 1, 2011 7:46 PM BST
yes...one of money trees ran in the 3.30 and came second in the 4.00
Report Phone-Keys-Wallet • October 1, 2011 7:48 PM BST
There was definately one on the A/W around about 2000/2001-ish

This it was a evening meeting (I think Wolves) and it ran twice on the same card

Don't recall the name though

Incorrect - Rule changed many years before that.

Technically Phone Keys is right...But even tho the horse in question won twice the same day he didn't run twice the same day Richard Fahey/Paul Hanagan Altay  He was successful on the track at Lingfield Park and was awarded another race by the Jockey Club Stewards at Portman Square the same day.

Altay wins twice on same day

By Richard Evans

12:01AM GMT 16 Jan 2003

Success number one came when he landed a handicap at the all-weather venue in a similar, effortless, style to when 'winning' there by four lengths seven days earlier.

However, the crucial difference yesterday was the absence of a stewards inquiry, which resulted in Altay losing the race last week after jockey Paul Hanangan was found guilty of "major irresponsible riding".

Soon after Altay justified favouritism yesterday, the Jockey Club disciplinary committee began hearing an appeal by trainer Richard Fahey against the disqualification of his six-year-old and by Hanagan against a six-day ban imposed by the Lingfield stewards.

After the two-hour hearing, Altay was reinstated as winner of last week's Lingfield race and Hanagan had his ban reduced to five days for "careless riding".

The Portman Square verdict goes some way to putting the record straight but it offers little consolation to the punters who made Altay favourite a week ago. They have lost their money thanks to the blunder by the Lingfield stewards.

Whether any officials or stewards will pay a price for their error remains to be seen.

While Altay's daily double will probably earn him a place in the record books, Martin Pipe is all set to create another piece of history at Taunton this afternoon, where the champion trainer is responsible for 10 of the 16 runners in the Orchard Restaurant Handicap Hurdle

On the AW did a horse called Rapporteur do it?
Report onlooker • October 1, 2011 9:29 PM BST
All-Weather started in late 1989.

Certain that the Entry Rule changed well before that.

Rapporteur was just another multiple winner.
Report fawwon • October 1, 2011 9:35 PM BST
I would have gone all in on it happening at wolver,  think I went the night it happened with 8/1riverkeen. Racecard is somewhere in the house.
P. Evans trained it unless I am mistaken (very likely)
Report fawwon • October 1, 2011 9:38 PM BST
I'll text him to see if he remembers
Report elise • October 1, 2011 9:45 PM BST
this is true, it shouldn't happen but it did & i can't name trainer or jockey for obv reasons....it's from ireland and it was over jumps;

a well known top jockey is lining up for the first race, he looks across at one of the opposing horses and recognises it; they've saddled the wrong horse and the animal lining up for the race is the horse he should be riding in an hours time

he has a word with the young lad riding it, it's supposed to be an absolute rag so he says, just drop out and pull it up, i'm supposed to be winning on it later; the young lad agrees

the race starts but unfortunately for the young lad riding the horse has other ideas and even though he's running over a trip short of his best it ends up fighting out the finish, just getting touched off in a photo

the seasoned top jock is not too happy, however the horse now awash with sweat is cleaned up as best possible and duly paraded an hour later in its proper race for which it's fav

top jock thinks, i'll just drop out and pull him up, he won't go a yard he's knackered, but once again the horse has other ideas and again battles his way to the front, runs a belter and gets nodded in a photo for the second time that day

so .. although he didn't win either race, at least one horse has indeed raced twice in a day (all be it unofficially), running the best part of 5 miles and getting in the photo both times

the postscript to this is about the rag which never ran in the first race; on its next start instead of being a 33s shot it went off 9/4 fav and was stuffed out of sight
Report fawwon • October 1, 2011 9:58 PM BST
Just texted 8/1riverkeen, and he is also sure an Evans horse ran twice on the same night at wolver, mid to late 90s

Although this was on two seperate days i can remember a horse winning the last race on Friday night and the first race on Saturday at the same course(I think it may have been Haydock) therfore actually winning two races in succession.
Report megsy • October 2, 2011 4:58 AM BST
it was a frequent practise in Australia pre 70's,
even the mighty phar lap ran twice in a day and ran 4 races in a week during the melbourne cup carnival and won them all.
Report Outpost • October 2, 2011 8:38 AM BST
in the good old days they used to run heats for the plate (a 2ml or 2m 4f flat race) and then run the final and if there was a dead heat in either the final or one of the heats then they had to run that race again.
Report ged • October 2, 2011 11:27 AM BST
Was there not a mix-up with Reg Hollinshead's horses (at Sandown?) one evening a few years ago which led to the same horse running twice on the card?
Report jimnast • October 2, 2011 11:36 AM BST
does the prix abbeye a few years ago count ?
Report jimnast • October 2, 2011 11:37 AM BST
