Does anyone know where I can find out the Racing Weights of Flat Jockeys please?
As always trying to find an 'angle'. You'll have to humour me as to why, but I'm sure there must be a list somewhere of what weight give or take a pound a jockey puts up?
I know they can make extreme weights to get top rides. But trainers looking for jockeys must be able to see a 'regular' weight that each individual rides at in some sort of list somewhere? But Where?
An article in 2006 said this ''In a typical flat race in Britain, rider and saddle together may have to weigh as little as 8st 4lb. By punishing body and soul, Dettori manages a minimum of about 8st 7lb.''
So a trainer must be able to know that if he's say, got a load of headgear ect going on his horse that this along with the saddle ect , what is the maximum weight of jockey he needs to engage to conform with the handicap weight his horse is going to run with. ie if his horse has to carry 9-0 and his tack is going to weigh 8 lb (?), it would be no good trying to book Dettori unless he was prepared to accept putting up 1 lb overweight.
So somewhere there must be a list of individuals average riding weights that this trainer can access so he only needs to try and book those that can make the weight?
Also, another question is .....does anyone know the average weight of the standard kit, saddle, bridle etc?.....and how much extra say big fluffy cheekpieces , full eyeshields etc each weigh roughly?
Any help would be very much appreciated

oh, and I'm assuming that e.g. the 8st 7lb Dettori quoted includes his silks, boots, hat and whip etc.

I can see how going for every angle is a good idea but I'm not sure there is much to be gained from it in these circumstances.
It's usually only in handicaps that a jockey making the weight is an issue and if using your example Dettori usually does 8st 7lbs and a trainer wants to book him to ride at 8st 5lbs then if he really wanted him and Dettori really wanted the ride he would be given plenty of notice to be able to lose the few extra pounds in time. The thing about the kit such as standard bridles and saddles is that all horses will have them attached so it's not really as if there will be any advantage gained. As for saddles it depends on the weight the jockey has to do and there are special lightweight ones but then again if the horse is carrying a low weight anyway then there will me no or little artificial weight in the form of weight plates needing to be added. As for nose bands and cheek pieces then these weight next to nothing but even if they did add a tiny amount overall, you have to offset this with the advantages they give and usually the benefits outweigh the risks involved when using them. |

 )Yes, totally agree re the advantages of headgear outweighting their weight. its not something i was doubting. Like I say, you'll have to 'humour' me on the angle(s) I'm playing with....at the end of the day probably will come to the conclusion that I'm wasting my time here. But we do have to try these things, its half the fun! Very intresting what you say about the lightweight kit . I would still like to know the average weight of a standard kit and also now of the lightweight kit to factor into my research. If anyone knows...please? Of course, I do realise that without the Horses own weights (God bless America!) being available to us in the UK, this whole exercise is pretty futile, but hey ho! also, the jockey's min weight stated on the PJA site Jackiebaby gave me is not an actual race day weight (which we're also not told) so ...........well, I'm having fun playing If I do find something worth considering I'll post it up.Thanks again DebAM |
