Mick Lambert. Traveling head lad at Easterby's landed a massive treble at crazy odds including Within the Law and little Owl and set himself up training on the outskirts of Malton.

In no time at all he had Keelby Cavalier, Fine Sun, Aristo Treat, Cloudwalker, Fine Sun, Tepylon, Rage Glen winning races for him mostly ridden by Tony Charlton they landed gamble after gamble. He even managed to win the Brockelsby with Our Dynasty, his owner recieving and refusing 1/4 of a million for it. Turned out there were two fools that one that offered it and the one that refused it when Chief Singer left him in his wake in his next race.

Gambling owners flocked to Mick Lambert's yard and he was flying but it was short lived. Tony Charlton had been worth a weight in gold to Mick and a great judge of when a horse was ready to win but he left/retired to start training.  Mick was a great guy but he  himself wasn't a great judge and thought everything he trained was going to win and with too many gambles going astray the owners started to dwindle and Mick disappeared just as quickly as he started. Last I heard he was in Spain recovering from an operation but was doing ok for himself. Lovely fella hope he's in good form.

Roger Fisher was another trainer who set the world alight but I think Dudley Moffat had an awful lot to do with his success. I see he's still around but
nothing like the old days.

It's amazing what difference one person  can make to a training establishment Ken Oliver wouldn't have had a winner if it weren't for his wife Rhona who was totally hands on while Ken stayed home all day.

The next might be Nicky Henderson and he is about to lose or has lost his right hand man , many say is the driving force at Seven Barrows and thing will deteriorate without him around. I'm sure Nicky knows enough about the game and is wide enough not to let that happen but who knows.

Going back to the first trainer mentioned Charlie Cyzer, oops sorry Charles Cyzer, complained about the poor prizemoney for the main reason he was quitting training, but also felt the game had become too informal, people now call me Charlie instead of Charles, shock of horrors!, good riddance to you.

As for Charlie Brooks?, the trainer of Man Mood no less, and the trainer of the suspiciously pulled up odds on Celtic Shot" at Aintree, a 3 horse race, two Pipe runners, with Pipes then stable jockey Peter Scu ellecting to ride Brooks horse, the winner Aquilifer was very well backed, while Celtic Shot was abrubtly pulled up  about half way, while still apparently going well within himself, echos of Man Mood, good riddnace to you too Brooks!.

I'm wrong about my recollection of the Celtic Shot race but only slightly, the horse wasn't actually pulled up but virtually stopped to a walk by Scudamore after drifting out to 1/1 money, and there was actually 5 runners as I found it by googling it.

« 1   Aquilifer 11/2  11 11-5  M C Pipe  — * * »
ch g Deep Run - Gentle Eagle (Symbol) R Dunwoody
Made virtually all, ridden 2 out, ran on well

« 2  1½  Norton's Coin 4/1  10 11-5  Sirrell Griffiths  — * * »
ch g Mount Cassino - Grove Chance (St Columbus) G McCourt
Held up, led on bit 3 out, blundered badly and headed next, led approaching last, jumped slowly, soon headed and no extra flat

« 3  25  Stay On Tracks 50/1  9 11-5  W A Stephenson  — * * »
gr g Roselier (FR) - Bee In Bonnet (Track Spare) C Grant
Prominent until outpaced 12th, soon ridden and behind

« 4  6  Celtic Shot EvensF  9 11-9  C P E Brooks  — * * »
b g Celtic Cone - Duckdown (Blast I) Peter Scudamore
With leader, hit 11th, soon weakened, tailed off

« PU   Arctic Call 5/1  8 11-5 b Oliver Sherwood  — * * »
b g Callernish - Polar Lady I (Arctic Slave) Jamie Osborne
Blundered 1st, soon chasing leaders, bad mistake 4th, lost touch 12th, tailed off when pulled up before 14th

Had a friend with a horse with Mick Easterby. When introduced to Guy Harwood he told him about his horse with Easterby and suggested that Harwood might like to train for him in the future. The reply was that anyone with a horse with Easterby could not afford him as a trainer.Perhaps that is why he ceased to train.

Delyth Thomas a shocking omission....

There were a few Welsh trainers that emerged on the coattails of Evan Williams and Tim Vaughan. They seemed to enjoy a lot of success initially (attracting some cynicism) before things quietened down and they seemed to disappear. The recently-returned Alison Thorpe and Keith Goldsworthy are two who come to mind, but I think there were a few others.

Steve Gollings seemed to disappear almost overnight. I think his main/only owner pulled all of his horses out of the yard, but I could be wrong.

Fred Kirby is a small NH trainer that I can recall from around 15-20 years ago. Allan Dickman on the flat.
