Adrian has in fact clarified to me yet again, today, that this is exactly the case. He has hundreds of emails (and will not be able to reply to them all, I'm sure: in fact he's said expressly that he can't). I'm sure he's perfectly happy to hear from users of the ratings thanking him for their 13-year history, but he really isn't open to productive suggestions of "saving the ratings", or any other parts of the site, including the database, I'm afraid.

Proform Professional Prices (Minimum order is 8 weeks)
1 - 12 weeks  =  £13.75 per week
13- 29 weeks  =  £12.75 per week
30 or more weeks  = £11.75 per week

bit steep imo
Report know all March 14, 2011 11:47 AM GMT
seems a fair price for proform but most of these 3700 want something for free and that wins and makes a profit, they will carry on dreaming its possible for free
Report MANCHESTERSKYTRAIN March 14, 2011 11:55 AM GMT
Very steep just one of the many things you would actually think about subscribing to if the pricing wasn't so greedy, £20 a month would be fair, but proform, raceform, timeform , visual form book and formbet they all want £50 -£80 a month, at £20 i would probably subscribe to a couple of them, at £50 i will leave it, shame they would probably get the same income from tempting more customers, tried all of them except timeform and they all have useful features just not useful enough to want to slash out over £50 every  month for, Massey was very rare in having a useful free online racing resourse.
i also look at racingoracle.net for free speed figures and patternform but the ratings used there are just re-hashed RPR and Topspeed so not much fresh about them, used to be excellent years ago when incorporating his own speed ratings.
Just a shame one of these firms can't price in the average racing enthusiast instead of turning us off
Report artie March 14, 2011 12:00 PM GMT
Proform looks very interesting, and prices look fair, but MINIMUM SUBSCRIPTION 8 WEEKS.What happens if you discover in the first weeks research that it's not for you.Seven weeks money down the pan.

However, judging by the latest blog posting (http://horseracingstudy.blogspot.com/2011/03/important-site-update.html)

......."we will be creating far easier to use areas to query the ratings performance in different scenarios and to save them into systems."

it's a distinct possibility you'll be able to do that in the not too distant.

For me, the main problem with the Adrian Massey ratings was encapsulated in the Ryanair Chase, in which Albertas Run was his lowest rated horse. I'm not suggesting it should have been his top-rated selection, but it has strong Festival form and is, overall, a good horse, especially in the Spring. But according to Massey's computer program, it's the worst of all. Moreover, if you were to lay it on the basis of its ratings, you'd be pretty angry.

HRB ratings didn't fare much better SS

as has already been pointed out on this thread, there are a number of different approaches to try to profit from published ratings. One obvious course if the ratings are popular and widely used, is to see if they are overbet as a result.

SeldomSeen, the "Albertas Run" anomaly has been in AM's ratings for years.  When I started looking at his ratings in 2004(?), watched for three months to see how the "bottom 3" did.  The bounce was clearly there.

But as one that uses filters to look at cards, once you build an algorithm, you stick to it since, for example in horses, it might not always throw up the winner but it might find a value ew in the same race.

The other thing I found over the years with the ratings is that once you got into a field like a Cheltenham or a Royal Ascot, when you have 8, 10, 12 horses with ability, it goes beyond the ratings.

If nothing else, AM's site made me think more and more about racing and the importance of keeping track of performance to narrow down your decision making.

How I used the site was not the front pages but how he rated the past runs.  From there, I built my own algorithms for each track.

I remember taking his historical and plotting them against results to try to match how he did it.  I shelved that and have built my own that I will fine-tune this flat season.

But if anyone does know the foundation of his ratings, would love to know.
Report SHAPESHIFTER March 17, 2011 11:32 PM GMT

With his, you could put P Nicholls - Fontwell and out pops a list of all winners, by class, by odds etc ie

Class 2 W-R
Under 8-1 W-R

etc etc. Can horseracebase do this or Timeform or Raceform?

Report anfieldkings March 20, 2011 1:20 PM GMT
horseracebase does all that you want, from that sort of example you have given ballydoyle.

the search criteria takes a while to locate everything as there are a lot of options (more than massey). the advantage of adrians site was the inclusion of betfair SP to calculate returns. you can convert industry SP to approximated betfair odds on HRB but i really liked the actual prices AM site returned.
Report anfieldkings March 20, 2011 1:22 PM GMT
before i joined HRB i had a 3 free day trial (last nov)

not sure whether its still going but i'd certainly check it out. you are not tied in for any longer than 1 month so even if no free trial still 7.5e is worth it to check it out for the month imo.

Must be me cos I can get from my example P Nicholls - Fontwell but how do you break down results class by class for example?
Report anfieldkings March 20, 2011 1:32 PM GMT
quick search tick trainer and course and submit then highlight p nicholls and fontwell.

if you want them results returned by class you would go into full search and tick class and run query you would then have paul nicholls at fontwell and results for class.

if you wanted other break downs for nicholls at fontwell choose full search extra you can then break down results into multiple categories.

HRB definitely does what massey can

Re Anyone know a good alternative to the "custom builder" on the Massey website?

Hi Ballydoyle

I use Proform software not free but very versitile and very powerful.

Hmmm.it's ok but nothing like as user friendly as Massey and would require some amount of digging

With Massey, you can just punch in P Nicholls at Fontwell and immediately it lists all the stats and you can see that he's to be of interest in Class 4 or below non-handicaps under 8-1. So easy....totally sucks he is chucking the site!

i don't know what else to add it takes a bit more effort but the searches can be far more defined.

if its not for you thats a shame.

ballydoyle you want profiler on horseracebase

use the search facility to locate Nicholls and then click on Profiler

of course swift

i only really use that for horses but yes that would give a good at a glance breakdown.

Aaah...I'm only on the free trial just now. Where is profiler? Dont think you can get that from the free trial?
