Why did she just say at the end that Imperial Commander trounced his rivals? Tidal Bay very nearly caught him. Women shouldn't be on TV.

After her remarks this morning about the novice chase at Huntingdon it shows how much she knows about the game.  Practically zilch!
Report pedrobob November 20, 2010 4:30 PM GMT
doubt that Alice follows racing day in, day out, but she is very knowledgable about the "horse" and what's involved in riding and training
Report jmdc November 20, 2010 4:31 PM GMT
So you agree with me that she shouldn't be commenting on the day's racing!
Report pedrobob November 20, 2010 4:37 PM GMT
if you looking for a form expert, Alice possibly not your person. But it does help to have someone commentating who is very knowledgable about horse husbandry, can judge a horse in the paddock, knows all about jumping obstacles etc - which is more than can be said for a lot of commentators who've never sat on or been near a horse in their lives
Report jmdc November 20, 2010 4:45 PM GMT
OK.  That explains why Lesley Graham is on the programme too.  I suppose that The Morning Line is not for the purist but more the viewer who is being introduced to horseracing.  That's good but why do they have to tip horses!

I have to agree with the majority on here that Plunkett is useless, in fact the pairing of her and Fat Boy Down is a disaster. Both come across has full of themselves, public school educated and pompous, hardly a winning combo to entice the masses.

Its about time Chappers and Fitz took over the Terrestrial TV coverage and we got shot of Fat Boy and A Plunkett

Normally a fan of ratpack but the fact that Tommo had to give the rambling Hoiles the hurry-up a couple of times this morning was telling.

Alice is a good racecourse presenter because she knows about horses; no good on the Morning Line as she knows nothing about form (like some of the others).

Alice makes a pleasant change from Jimbo's arrogance, Fat Al's sarcasm and Leslie (WTF does she think SHE is - what has SHE ever done?!)

Give the girl a break... she fulfils a purpose, is good on the eye, is a stone better on form than the Ramsden/Spencer girl...and I know which I'd rather muck out...   :O)PPP

I agree with most of the posts on this thread in that she knows the bare minimum about racing & form. She (and the rest of the women) only ever interject with the bleedin' obvious when joining in a debate. That was a particular irritation on TML earlier. Nothing against her though, or any others (bar Thompson, of course) but some of them just do not deserve to be involved with the sport. PS - Elise...I can't stand Sick Fcuk either! Smug, patronising poly-syllabic pr*ck!

Genius

- Boycie
- Francome
- The Voice of Ireland

Deserve a Job
- Fitz

- Catt
- Emma Spencer
- Enzo

To be sacked
- Down (pompous cretin)
- Jim McGrath of Timeform loves himself
- Plunkett hopeless
- Weaver and Harvey utterly unwatchable

Harchibald...

Whilst I'm not exactly a fan of the MANNER in which you voiced your last opinion    :O)PP

I have to say I'm broadly in line with the content.

Mac is good comedy value, and has a hotline to the punter... and the public love him. People forget how much he gently nurtured Tania when she first arrived all nervous and twitchy...

Tania has the inside info from the bookies...

But many of the others just sit and prattle...

In fact the whole programme is too much chit chat now... too geared to hooking missis miggins rather than enlightening the genuine enthusiast.

Time to get back to showing a LOT of form, discussing the real merits of horses, and cut the waffle, cut the adverts - the CONSTANT cutting away during live coverage for commercial breaks 60 seconds before the off is UNACCEPTABLE - that is PRECISELY when we need to be seeing them going down, hearing where the money is piling in etc
Report Shrew D November 21, 2010 6:11 PM GMT

@ SHrew D

Couldn't agree more re Alice...

She's had a pile of bad luck and comes back fighting each time... and is not some complete bozo: moreover, not many on here will have ridden Badminton AND Aintree!!!

I can't pretend to have WFP's looks, money or breeding... and may well have been ten years (and the rest) too old for her... but by GOD I would have lined up to fight for her hand...  Not many girls can make you, at various times, want to nurture, ride off into the sunset with, laugh/drink with, cook for, bonk senseless... but she surely can and anyone who turns up in my "Mannnah" slating her will get a couple of black eyes and flat tyres!!
Report Harchibaldy November 21, 2010 7:13 PM GMT

Nah - been betting here for years but only joined the forum recently... hoping it would be a source of useful inside info and a bit of banter...

Quite shocked at all the abuse and vitriol I've seen, but assume a lot of people speak through their wallets after a good or bad day...
Report Harchibaldy November 21, 2010 7:28 PM GMT
I'm a relative newcomer too and I joined the forum for exactly the same reasons as you. I wouldn't mind if there was ANY humour in the vitriol, but there isn't. I'm probably your main culprit for some of the sh*t on here but I've never posted any pocket talk. I think those in the public eye that deserve criticism, should rightfully get it and as I'm sure you're aware, my oar goes in quite deep! Grin

There was a time when Alice Plunkett featured so often in this column that she earned the sobriquet 'the mistress of mishap'. Incidents and accidents included a head-on car crash on the drive down to her parents' farm - the other driver was her father - and the occasion when a horse fell over some poles and, in the ensuing melee, her ear came off. The healing process included the fitting of leeches.
